Despite the brash billboard culture, commercialized sentimentality, and cheap tourism of the contemporary world, two men tap into the grandeur of the Mississippi River and its quaint American spirit in this nostalgic poetic journey.

Laced with references to Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the poem revisits the glories and tragedies of America's past as the men take an encore road trip down the Mississippi Valley's small towns and natural environments. The reminiscence is fittingly cut short as the journey is halted prior to reaching New Orleans by the floods and devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Belmont resident Peter Neil Carroll is a former creative writing teacher at the University of San Francisco and former editor of the San Francisco Review of Books. He is the author of Keeping Time: Memory, Nostalgia, and the Art of History.
