A bitter Howard Kemp (James Stewart) heads westward to the Rockies from Abilene, Kansas on the trail of murderer Ben Vandergroat (Robert Ryan) and the $5000 reward on Vandergroat's head, money after which Kemp lusts in order to re-purchase the ranch that his absconding fiancée had sold during his stint in the army. Kemp unexpectedly crosses paths with an old, star-crossed gold miner, Jesse Tate (Millard Mitchell), and with a recently-discharged soldier of questionable repute, Roy Anderson (Ralph Meeker). Teaming up, they nab Vandergroat and his girl, Lina Patch (Janet Leigh), but Vandergroat tries to turn his three distrustful, avaricious captors against each other during the return trip.
Broken Arrow (1950)
By 1870, there has been 10 years of cruel war between settlers and Cochise's Apaches. Ex-soldier Tom Jeffords (James Stewart) saves the life of an Apache boy and starts to wonder if Indians are human, after all; soon, he determines to use this chance to make himself an ambassador. Against all odds, his solitary mission into Cochise's stronghold opens a dialogue. Opportunely, the president sends General Howard (Basil Ruysdael) with orders to conclude peace. But even with Jeffords' luck, the deep grievance and hatred on both sides make tragic failure all too likely...
