"Stanley" made automotive history late in 2005 when it won the American Grand Challenge; a contest sponsored by the US government’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa). The objective of the Grand Challenge was for entrants to design a vehicle that would autonomously complete a 220km course through Southern California’s Mojave Desert without any human control or intervention. “Stanley” rose to the challenge and, finishing first ahead of four other teams, became the first vehicle ever to cover such a long distance without a driver or external intervention. Twenty-three teams participated in total. The name “Stanley” is derived from Stanford University, which, together with the Volkswagen Group’s North American Electronics Research Laboratory (ERL) developed the autonomous vehicle in less than 12 months. Stanley has been on display at museums around the world since the win in 2005 and now Stanley will be coming to The Tech! Come and take a look at this amazing vehicle!
