One of Broadway's brightest comedy hits, this wildly funny spoof of avant-garde drama makes high comedy of the nagging indignities which flesh is heir to. This bizarre and hilarious example of theatre of the absurd is a fun look at a love triangle like you've never seen. When the play begins there is Harry Berlin who has sunk low. He has no future except to jump from a bridge. Enter Milt Manville, a picture of prosperity who is all sympathy. But LUV has ample place in its bosom for more than one miserable fellow. Milt is also full of frustration, for his wife won't release him and let him marry the girl he loves. Milt's wife, Ellen appears and it is clear that she, too, is torn by anguish. A triangle matched in misery. And then Milt has had an inspiration. Why not bring Ellen and Harry together and thus win the freedom to marry the other girl? And then there is this sandbox on stage? Truly a bizarre and fun piece reminiscent of Ionesco's work.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this "play about a marriage and a dog"--an offstage doggie presence? a very well-trained canine? For some reason, I didn't expect a dog portrayed by an actress...but that's what I got, and it only added to the fun of this nineties comedy examining what's really important in life. Thus comedy is a great way to start Northside's new season! Collapse

This was my 2nd NTC show and I was once again impressed with the caliber of its performances. Great acting, good storyline and intimate venue made for a terrific Girls Night Out.

Besides being a funny but tender script, the ensemble work of the lead women, Ida, Lucille, and Doris, is warm and genuine and very moving. This is one more example of excellent theater in our area. Space has been used well to create a perfect set that is visually lovely and effective for the many moods the actors portray in this very human story. Collapse

Although preview night was a bit bumpy with some line issues and pacing, ultimately this is a great script and once is gels, you will likely see the potential that a great story, great emotion, solid casting, vulnerable acting, and creative staging can have. The laughter is as strong as the drama well balanced in the script and in the performance. This is likely going to appeal to a older crowd but I still found it charming in many ways, even if I couldn't identify with all of the characters all the time. Collapse

I found myself a bit distracted by some small details, but there is enough good stuff here, and talent on the stage (as well as a great set) to entertain. Pacing clipped along, and the story was compelling enough. Not a hit out of the park but good work all around and certainly commendable in many ways. Collapse

Great storyline and great acting by all! A combination of humor mixed in with a little family drama in a cozy theatre setting. I would highly recommend seeing this show.

I've seen many shows at Northside, and this was one of the best. Top-notch entertainment in a small, intimate setting. More than your money's worth!

A sophisticated comedy sprinkled with Steve Martin's zane, staged quite well! A comedy that actually gets lots of laughs instead of just thinking it should. In this cast with no weak links, naming standouts is almost unfair. But traditionally it's okay, so standouts include Ross Harkness (Gaston), Lucinda Dobinson (Germaine), Jason Salazar (Sagot), and Rebecca Wallace in triplicate. Angie Higgins deftly directs a lighter take on the brilliant Martin script, and ensures enough depth and tone that can make you think and tug on a dramatic string or two... If you want to let it. But you can just sit there and laugh. Alot. Easily the best that this patron has seen at Northside, and one of the best in the area this year. Collapse
