    How does a human figure take up space? What does the gesture of the body reveal? What does the clothing tell us about society? How can one connect to or even BE this figure? Painter and mosaic artist Jude Pittman explores these questions in her exhibition New Works: Paintings and Giclee Prints by Jude Pittman presented at Avenue 25 Gallery during September and October.

    Pittman, an artist who works concurrently in many media which might involve painting, drawing, mosaic, photography, and print making, is fascinated by the positioning of the human figure in space. She states that “the gestural body is to me a universal sign of our humanity.” While studying and rendering the body she admits to feelings and thoughts about “our tenuous hold on realities, grasping or letting go, wanting/not wanting, the ubiquitous doubt.” She muses that the gestures of and the clothing worn by the figure tell us something about society.

    While Pittman has devoted most of her recent time to oil painting, the artist has extensive experience in producing both private and public mosaic murals. Her solo and group mosaic works (created out of fossils, mirrors, glass, commercial and/or hand made tiles, and found objects) reach from the Bay Area to Utah. Jude Pittman received her M.A. in Art from SF State University, with further studies at the Kala Institute, UC Berkeley, University of the Pacific, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She teaches expressive figurative drawing and public mosaic mural design at College of San Mateo.
