PANEL DISCUSSION 360 Revolution: A 40th Anniversary Celebration and Inside Look at IBM's $5 Billion Bet That Changed Computing and Business Forever IBM launched System/360 on April 7, 1964. Many consider it the biggest business gamble of all time. At the height of IBM's success, Thomas J. Watson, Jr. bet the company's future on a new compatible family of computer systems that would help revolutionize modern organizations. Get a behind-the-scenes view of the tough decisions made by some of the people who made them, and learn how the System/360 helped transform the government, science and commercial landscape. Fred Brooks, Jr. -- Project manager for System/360 from late 1961 until announcement in April 1964. He received, along with Erich Bloch and Bob Evans, the National Medal of Technology at the White House by President Reagan in 1985 for his work in developing the S/360. Bob O. Evans -- Then vice president of development for the IBM Data Systems Division, Evans is credited with persuading management to abandon a less ambitious product plan for one that resulted in the S/360. Erich Bloch -- In 1962, Bloch headed development of the Solid Logic Technology program (SLT) which provided IBM with microelectronic technology for the S/360.
