Spirit & Form is a showcase of three Bay Area sculptors whose works, human-scale and larger, present us with aspects of humanity, history, and cultural identity. Randall Shiroma creates abstract forms that suggest monuments and artifacts of times long past. They speak of human creation and a universal aspect of the human spirit. Yoshio Taylor’s stylized figures are masks of cultural identity. Though they seem at first to be culture specific, they are, upon reflection, indicative of the many cultural facets we each carry with us in today’s world. Wanxin Zhang looks to the past in his whimsically updated take on the massive sculptures of China, such as the famed Terra Cotta Warriors. Together these three artists give views of humanity from historical realism to stylized and abstract portrayals of who and what we are.
