This marks Miller's first solo exhibition in San Jose. 47 at 47 is an installation of new typographic works by Joe Miller featuring delightfully abrasive to violently sentimental poetic excerpts rendered in unexpected materials—from fallout shelter signs to stolen paintings and family heirlooms. In Fallout 1, we see an excerpt of a poem by the artist sandblasted into a vintage fallout shelter sign, this section of the poem describes a visit to Kansas by the artist as a young teen. In another work, Acquisition (amended), Miller applies text to the surface of a painting found at a thrift sale. The poem, spread over several pieces in the exhibition, is comprised of brief lines relating the artist's thoughts on his interactions with others. Miller will also be available in the gallery from 12pm to 4pm each Saturday during the exhibition to chat and to work on additional pieces. He asks that the public please come by to keep him company.

Joe Miller is a graphic designer, design educator, poet, and performance artist. Born and raised in the East Bay city of Richmond, Joe moved to San José in 1979 to attend San José State University. Joe's work in design has appeared in over 55 national to international books and publications, has received more than 120 regional to international awards, and has been included in exhibitions nationwide, including the AIGA gallery in New York City.
