    At the fourth concert of the season Maestro Shoebotham will lead the orchestra in Mahler’s great Symphony No.1 in D Major. Completed in 1906, the work, first described as a “symphonic poem,” demonstrates the composer’s conviction that a symphony should build “a new world with every available technical means. The ever-new changing content determines its own form. This major work combines post-Wagnerian harmony, rustic folk music, child-like innocence, and a late Romantic fascination with death. The Philharmonic string sections will also perform the Concerto Grosso No.1 for Strings and Piano Obbligato by Ernest Bloch.
