Award-winning composer Libby Larsen's newest chamber work, composed for the Palo Alto based Manzanita Piano Quartet, will be premiered during this program which will also include Richard Strauss' Piano Quartet and the Trout Quintet by Schubert with bassist Christy Crews.  Libby Larsen is one of America's most prolific and most performed living composers. Her several hundred works span musical genres from intimate to orchestral and opera. Entitled Over, Easy,  this new work has its roots in 1940's jazz idioms and has a typically vigorous contemporary American spirit. Founded in 1979, the Manzanita Piano Quartet is the only resident piano quartet on the Peninsula. Besides the well-known and well-loved standard repertoire, its concerts have included works by many contemporary composers such as Martinu, Poot, Surinach and Walton, some of which have been Bay Area or even Northern California premiers. Quartet members, all Palo Alto residents, are violinist Virginia Smedberg, violist Chalmers Smith, cellist Tita McCall, and pianist Carolyn Smith.
