The biotech revolution raises questions — fearful ones for many nonscientists — about the place of the human species in the cosmos and our ability to manipulate human nature. James Calder, local Bay Area author explores these questions through his series of detective novels.

James Calder will speak about his efforts to create an interpretive bridge through his novels, a bridge that brings readers inside the world of biotech and helps them to understand both what is hopeful and also what is startling about it. He will discuss how and why he uses fiction to create this bridge, some of the unique issues and challenges raised by bringing together the worlds of science and detective novels, and how he goes about meeting those challenges.
