Mixing the legendary sounds of Fela Kuti with some tricks gleaned from James Brown and P-Funk, Sila (who sings in Swahili and English) and company create a dancefloor-ready throb guaranteed to move you. A native of Kenya, band-leader and vocalist Sila is backed by Mike Pitre on trumpet, Andre Webb on trombone, David Boyce on saxophone, bassist Wendell Rand, Bennie Murray on drums, guitarists Ken House and David James, djembe player Karamba, and talking drum player Samba Guisse. They released their critically acclaimed debut album, The Funkiest Man in Africa, in 2006 on Visila Records. The band raises funds at their annual Afrofunk Music Festival on behalf of organizations such as Save the Children, who are working to improve the lives of children in Darfur, Kenya, and Uganda. Sila sings of the African experience: the problems he and many others face every day, in a language understood throughout the world. His lyrics and beats reflect the music, the language, the energy, and the spirit of growing up in Africa.

Point of Order performs an eclectic blend of music to groove to: Congolese funk, spoken word, original songs, and the occasional familiar cover tune. This awesome seven-piece ensemble features Congolese drum master and singer Tomas Boukaka, lead-guitarist Tony Pratt, singer-songwriter Patricia Nugent, and poet-percussionist Jonathan Fisher. The Redwood City based Point of Order have been creating their unique music together since 2000 and performing at benefits as well as private parties throughout the Bay Area.

“Afrobeat is more than just being a DJ,” says Jeremiah Kpoh. “Afrobeat is revolution.” For the 27-year-old Liberian native, known to San Francisco world music fans as DJ Jeremiah or, simply, Mr. Afrobeat, the genre represents not a violent uprising, but a movement of consciousness. Most commonly associated with the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Afrobeat is a mix of orchestral jazz, James Brown funk and African tribal chants, blended together into a polyrhythmic stew. The genre has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, as Western audiences have discovered Fela’s catalog and embraced American Afrobeat bands such as Antibalas, Albino, Aphrodesia and Afrobeat Down. DJ Jeremiah is a sought after Bay Area DJ and event promoter.
