An intimate series of narrative paintings, Karen Chew’s exhibition Kindred was inspired by her mother’s memories of childhood in Oakland’s Chinatown and her maternal grandmother’s worldly collection of ephemera. Two years of reflection and creativity have produced mixed media images that connect times past and present. While the Chinese heritage, influence, and mindset dominated the family’s everyday life, they wholeheartedly embraced American culture.

Twenty years ago Chew inherited countless boxes of her grandmother’s private letters, prized photos and keepsakes; she was the unofficial family historian, capturing personal moments of time and history with her treasured Brownie. An avid collector of things paper and pretty, her trove of postcards, stamps, greeting cards, and letters have created context for this body of work.
