Ripped from the headlines of The Weekly World News, Bat Boy, The Musical is a classic love story with a serious bite. This delicious twist on the modern day musical comedy tells the amazing story of a strange boy with pointy ears, his struggle to find a place in a world that shuns him, and the love that can create both miracles and madness. This Instant classic is a clamorous high-slapping, groundbreaking musical, whimsical, and a hip tour de force. It's remarkable what intelligent wit can accomplish.

Didn't know what to expect before the show and I'm glad I saw it. I was absolutely surprised on how much I enjoyed it, and I was glued up to the very end. I was secretly hoping it wouldn't end! It was ridiculously hilarious, superbly written/directed and brilliantly acted. The actors were all phenomenal! I liked the fact that the setting was small, so it had an intimate feel to it. Kudos to everyone involved, and I'll surely recommend to this show to my friends! Collapse

My friend and I enjoyed every minute of this musical experience that while never taking itself too seriously, still managed to get us to feel for Bat Boy (or Edgar, as they called him). Robert Brewer was amazing as the Bat Boy - hanging upside down and integrating every strange character ticks that made you truly believe he was a mutant person. His singing was beautiful and so powerful. I've seen Tim Reynolds in many productions down in Saratoga, but never have I seen him show such depth and dynamic growth. Truly a pleasure to watch. Many actors and actresses played several characters - switching with ease from male to female characters, delighting the audience. One of the best at this was my friend, Mike Rhone, who had us laughing uncontrollably. His portrayal of Pan was bar none! Other standout performances were from Lisa-Marie Newton, playing the mother character Meredith, and Kateri McRae as Shelley. The harmonies were fantastic, voices blending in such amazing ways! Great show last night! See Bat Boy! The quirky and macabre humor, blended with the brilliant quick- changes required of the rich cast of ensemble characters, work to heartily support the great work of the leads. Strong voices throughout, supported by an excitingly unconventional, Gospel-sounding, live band bring magnificent depth to the songs from such a surprisingly small cast. Bat Boy fills the Lohman Theater with a rich collection of hummable hymns brought to life by the bible-belt kitsch that can only be gleaned from the aisles of the local Piggly Wiggly Well-worthy of “cult-status!” Collapse

Having seen FMT's previous 3 seasons, I have come to have high expectations, and -as always- left with a smile and catchy tune to hum. Director Jay Manley takes a talented group of actors/singers and produces a cohesive unit able to perform multiple varying tasks and roles flawlessly. The star of the show is undoubtedly Robert Brewer (Bat Boy). The detail attributed by the actor to the complexity of his character and committment to humanizing the role is not lost during humorous moments (which are many). Tim Reynolds (Dr. Parker) shines, and although subtle, commands attention while onstage. Other notables include sweet-sounding Kateri McRae (Shelly), Sarah B. Griner (various), Todd Wright (Sheriff), and the energized gospel pastor (sorry, no name). For better or worse, I will not soon forget Michael Rhone's "pan" outfit and impressive vocal ability. Overall the production was very solid, however, as with all comedies, it could have benefitted from a larger audience. TWO BAT EARS UP!! Collapse

You will love this musical. Period. The music will follow you all the way home and make you want to look up the songs on itunes. Every single actor is so incredibly devoted to the characters they portray (and there are so many, and each one is hilarious!). Tim Reynolds is goosebump-inspiring as the demonic Doctor, Mike Rhone's gender bending is shockingly hilarious in a way you just can't get out of your mind...in a good way. Watch out for RaMond Thomas. He'll sneak up on ya and make you laugh your socks off! Kateri and Robert Brewer are wonderful together, genuine and heart- warming. This is a feel-good musical. A dark and disturbing feel-good musical, which will make you thankful you live in the bay area around "normal" people (except the one sitting next to you). Collapse

It was hilarious, creepy, sweet, charming, outrageous, & mind bending; but it was complete & unified. There were some brilliant performances only out-shined by some outstanding singing & character work. Lisa-Marie Newton & Kateri McRae blow you away with their smooth comic timing & wonderful sincerity. And what voices! Tim Reynolds will scare the S#%@ out of you, then make you care like you didn't think you could - and all the while singing so beautifully you could listen to him all day. The character actor ensemble will make you laugh until you cry - especially Mike Rhone with his fancy wig work & Sarah Griner as her hostess with the mostess. The background ensemble adds a wonderful edge to many numbers. Every one of them is outstanding to watch; interesting at all times. And Robert Brewer is charming and compelling as our Bat Boy. His voice makes you melt and his journey to humanity makes you giggle, gasp, laugh, cry, & scream! Truly Wonderful! Collapse

Jay Manley put together a very talented cast for this production. They shine in what is a strange, offbeat and very amusing musical adventure. I honestly cannot find anything negative to say about the performance of this show. The singing and choreography were great (choreography highlights: "Show You a Thing or Two," "Children, Children"). As well as wonderful voices, the actors all had superb comic timing, making me laugh almost every minute while never breaking their own straight faces. What an excellent example of farce. However, this musical has important morals to teach as well, and its dark themes are satisfyingly haunting. The ending completely shocked me, but it was a perfect ending... like the cathartic conclusion of a true Aristotelian tragedy, but with a farcical twist. I loved this show so much, I can't stop singing its praises to all my friends (the songs are catchy)! Do yourself a favor and go to this show, but don't read up on the plot beforehand. You'll be a little spooked, a lot amused, and quite pleasantly surprised at how the story goes. Collapse

This has to be one of the funniest shows I have ever seen. I knew nothing about it going in and I didn't stop laughing once. Yes, it is a bit rediculous at times, but if you learn early on to just go with it, it is magic from there. The cast is strong vocally, although there seemed to be some sound issues that threw some numbers off. The Bat Boy was superb, and the Shelley was great! The acting was solid as well from the cast. There were a few people who played multiple parts who were simply hysterical in every role. And then there is moment in the second act that had me rolling in the aisle. If you see it, which you should, you will know what I am talking about. I could say so much, but I don't want to ruin any surprises. Overall, an amazing production of an unbelievably funny show. I've seen many productions at Foothill and have loved every one of them; however, I was rather disappointed with their production of BAT BOY. The leads in this show are great and the ensemble sings very nicely, but for whatever reason, the show just did not gel and shine like their previous productions have. The poorly scripted book, bizarre musical numbers, and banal characters deserve much of the blame here, but also the staging and production values were not up to the professional standards Foothill is known for. Despite a talented cast, this BAT BOY just doesn't fly. Here's hoping their summer production of THE PRODUCERS will fare better. Collapse
