Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority - Award-winning filmmaker Kimberlee Bassford chronicles the remarkable life of Patsy Mink, the first woman of color to serve in the U.S. Congress. Mink was a fierce advocate for justice and equality and the co-author of Title IX, the 1972 landmark legislation banning sex discrimination in schools. With short A Song for Ourselves (30mins).

The Equation of Love and Death - Zhou Xun is a lovelorn, chain-smoking cab driver on the hunt for her ever-elusive boyfriend in this quick-witted dark comedy set in Kunming. Director Cao Baoping (Trouble Makers ) won San Sebastian’s New Directors Award for
this tale of a China of lovers, crooks and cops.

3rd South Asian International Shorts 2009 - A richly layered compilation of dark yet hopeful South Asian short films from the U.S., India, the U.K. and Australia. An intriguing range of stories and styles populate this program, from a lonely pharmacy worker and his relationship with a Mumbai prostitute to an inventive tale of thieves playing Russian Roulette.

Children of Invention - Living clandestinely out of a model home, a brother and sister take matters into their own hands when their mother gets caught up in a pyramid scheme that targets immigrants. An expansion of writer/director Chun’s acclaimed short Windowbreaker (SFIAAFF ‘07), this debut feature shows the great economic difficulties facing many Americans today, immigrants or otherwise.

Times of Departure - Be it on a crosstown bus or a plane headed overseas, through conformity or conflict, we are constantly transporting ourselves to new places, situations and even states of mind. The characters in these films take similar journeys—or at least flirt with the idea—and their departures are amazing to watch.

Half-Life - This apocalyptic family drama follows a sister and brother trying to cope in a near-future suburban California. Compared to everything from Donnie Darko to American Beauty, this Sundance success marks “the debut of a promising, truly independent artist.”

Heaven on Earth - A loveless arranged marriage, a mythic Indian King Cobra and the wintry confines of North America are at the heart of Mehta’s fearless, allegorical fable. As Chand (Preity Zinta) attempts to escape an unforgiving reality, she is brought into a surreal parallel life where the truth may lie in fantasy, and a snake might just be a man.

Tokyo! - A woman undergoes a fantastical transformation. A monstrous sewer-dweller terrorizes the streets. And a pizza delivery rocks an isolated man’s world. Three irresistibly quirky takes on the world’s most surreal city from international masters Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Leos Carax (Pola X) and Bong Joon-ho (The Host).
