ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY... "funny, elegant, and totally cheerful" - The New York Times The Peninsula’s acclaimed Foothill Music Theatre presents the Tony Award-winning ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, a quirky, libidinous romp about denizens of the theater world on a luxurious passenger train in the 1930’s. Delightfully written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, with a superb opéra bouffe score by jazz pianist Cy Coleman, ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY will be directed by award-winning director Jay Manley. Cathy Snider provides music direction and choreography will be by Tyler Risk. In this comedy of egos, Broadway producer and director Oscar Jaffe has left Chicago barely one step ahead of his creditors; his latest production was a disaster, his actors unpaid, his assets seized. Never one to surrender, however, the larger-than-life Jaffe quickly has a plan for a last-ditch, career-saving endeavor, one which depends on convincing his former leading lady (and ex-lover), now a Hollywood legend, to star in his latest play. A complete lack of funds, the absence of a script, and the fact that Lily now despises him are minor matters to be overcome, in Jaffe’s view. With all the necessary people aboard the luxury train The Twentieth Century, Jaffe will pull out all the stops to make Lily sign on the dotted line by the time they reach New York. Originally produced in 1978 starring Madeline Kahn, John Cullum, Imogene Coca and Kevin Kline, ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY was called "funny, elegant, and totally cheerful" by The New York Times, which went on to say "the musical has an exuberance … (and) has brought back the comedy in musical comedy." MUSICAL NUMBERS INCLUDE: Babbette, Five Zeros, I Have Written A Play, I Rise Again, I've Got it All, The Legacy, Life Is Like A Train, Lily, Oscar, Mine, Never, On the Twentieth Century, Our Private World, Repent, Saddle Up the Horse, Sextet, She's A Nut, Stranded Again Together, Veronique.
