I'm a bit skeptical of one person shows. Additionally I'm a bit of a heartless you know what when it comes to emotional, cathartic, dramatic theatre. It takes a lot for me to not roll my eyes. This show is 120 minutes of fascinating character study, storytelling, and moving prose. The actress is talented. The momentum really picks up and grabs you only 10 minutes into it, a what happens next kinds of compelling realtionship between audience and the story. I was surprised by how much I could connect to and especially in light of certain recent disasters not only is the core of the plot so universal but the circumstances are even more relateable and relevant. This theatre company does GREAT work, and you shouldn't be disuaded from experiencing it because you are't familiar with the Spanish language. This show is in all Englsih, but I've found that even when the show is subtitled or is in both English and Spanish, it's not at all hard to follow becuase of the great production value. Collapse

This show moves to San Francisco for a few weeks after this production and if you missed in in San Jose, it's worth a trip up to see it not only for the actual poetry and lyric quality of the story telling, but because the unique puppetry and presentation is unlikely to be something you see again in your life. It took my about 10 minutes to visually adapt to everything i'm looking and listening to, but this 75 minute no intermission production was dark, comic, moving, poingant, and political. Creative to be sure, and different, this is on par with all the great work that Teatro Vision does, i'm just always impressed with their show topics and high production value! Well done! Collapse

If you haven't seen Ghosts of the River yet, you are missing out! Truly you are in for (an appropriate for Halloween) treat! I'm honored that my friend actually came thinking it was a sock puppet or shadowed hands type of show and was so wrong! It's a creative combination of many forms of art and theater combined. The entire concept was historic and poetic yet brilliantly transcribed into quite modern compelling and actually very funny stories, some based on some true events. It just kept getting better and better! After the show, our audience was given a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and watch all the artists perform a piece! The writer, Octavio said it best, "It was like seeing "how a clock works from behind the face! I was already excited to witness a new Shadowlight Productions show, I've seen one a few years back and it was so awesome that I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. I'm glad that my friend and I agree it was so much better than both of us had expected! Collapse

A new and insightful work from the barrios of Los Angeles, providing a riveting look at the growing pains experienced as a culture of people tries to find its place in the status quo. A hard hitting and poignant look at the lives of twin brothers, caught up in familial loyalties; trying to succeed in a new culture, while remaining true to themselves. Thursday night's preview reflected that final tweeking would result in a 5 start production; providing much food for thought. The uniformity of the cast was outstanding, and the lone Anglo's role as the "fixer" provided the cultural clash giving insight into the hard compromises which have to be made in order to fit into the existent community. This is a production which should not be missed. The issues dealt with reflect the compromises which need to be made by an emerging culture. Collapse

Do youself a favor and go see this great theatre experience. As a avid theatregoer but not a spanish speaker I was a bit nervous about how much I would get out of this show, but I was delighted! Some of the best acting I have seen in the last year graced the MHP stage in a super story. Under 2 hours, this production is poetry and passion! The supertitles in English certainly help, but you will find you are mezmerized by the action, the acting, and the SOUND of the play. Fascinating to be in a multilingual audience sharing universal reactions. This is really a great evening. Collapse

The synopsis listed the play as being bilingual however this was misleading. The Spanish dialogue was approx. 99.9%. It would have been more enjoyable if subtitle of dialogue was presented.
