Having achieved all that is possible in this lifetime, Doctor John Faustus is irrepressibly drawn by the darker forces of the universe to the possibility of living a perfect and omnipotent life, capable of anything his heart desires. However, the cost is the damnation of his eternal soul. Raise a fist as this timeless tale of ambition, temptation, mortality and good vs. evil is presented with heavy metal flare.

Two Devil Horns way up for director Tom Gough for his brilliant concept and superb execution. Two more for Nick and Sarah Griner who bring fully developed characters out of the sometimes impenetrable dialogue. Strong ensemble work as well. My only complaint is the music could have been even louder. But don't let that stop you. Go see this!! Collapse

I just wanted to comment to anyone that may have suffered through air-conditioning problems in the Lohman theater in the past, that the issue has been addressed and resolved.

Three things make this a great production: the integration of heavy metal into the action; the use of horror movie/goth elements in the set and costume designs; and the brilliant idea of casting Mephistopheles and Lucifer as women. The pacing and energy were more like a rock concert than what you might expect from a 400-year old play. Even though I could identify few of the songs, and don't care much for metal (I'm in my fifties, so when I think "heavy metal" I think Led Zeppelin), the music and accompanying choreography enhanced the play's action and dialog perfectly. As for the horror/goth perspective, the director deserves credit for demonstrating that "Faustus" is a horror story as much as "The Exorcist" or Dracula movies are. Finally, casting women as the leading devils highlighted how Faustus was seduced into making a pact with the devil and the extent to which he succumbed to the seductiveness of evil itself. If Marlowe were alive, this is the way he'd do the play. Collapse

Sometimes you try to take an old play and put a new spin on it and it's awful. But not this time! The heavy metal theme for the old show Doctor Faustus was so "right on" that I'm still thinking about the play days later. I loved the spin on Mephostopheles, the Devil and the damned. I thought the interplay between old world and new technology was brilliantly done. I even loved the description of the production in the playbill written by director Tom Gough. In short - I liked it a lot and I will go see more of his stuff. He's got a fresh perspective that is worth seeing. Collapse

Caught the preview performance of Foothill's Faustus, and had to let everyone know about it! Honestly, I'm not normally drawn to heavy metal or hard rock; however, it was HARD for me not to enjoy this production. Helmed by director Tom Gough, you will think you've gone to heaven as your eyes and ears take in this tingling show. Gough's passion for the music and play is evident throughout. Nick Muntean shines as the title role and may have had to sell his own soul to master his dialouge as well as he did. Sarah Griner commands the stage as well as her prose as Mephostophilis, while other actors of note are: Kim Johnson and Tim Goble as the clowns, Brian Van Winkle as the Pope, the Seven Sins, and Lucy Littlewood as a role she was sired to play. Impressed with quick set changes and the AMAZING Sound and Lighting Design --having now seen it, I can't imagine it being done any other way. Kudos to Bruce McLeod and Julie Engelbrecht for eye-popping sets and costumes. Bravo! SEE THIS SHOW!!!! Collapse
