    We close the season with a number of short choral gems and two materpieces of the late classical period: Schubert's Magnificat and Beethoven's Mass in C Major. Schubert composed the Magnificat at the young age of 18, but the spontaneous lyricism and youthful energy of this Magnificat promises the mature Schubert. Although by the time Beethoven composed the Mass in C, his status as a composer of instrumental works was assured, he was less experienced in sacred music and had never before set the words of the Mass. Nonetheless, the Mass in C reveals an intensely personal and vividly dramatic response to the central liturgical texts.
