Founders Day Fandango
July 26, 2009
It's an afternoon of fun, music, singing, dancing, and crafts from the late 1700s and early 1800s, featuring performances by the Calicanto singers and Alta California dancers. Children will have the opportunity to dress in costumes of the period, rope a bull, ride a horse across the swollen Colorado River, make a clay pot with Ruben Reyes, listen to stories by Juana Briones reenactor Olga Loya, make a clay roof tile, dip a candle, make an adobe brick, make tortillas, and view displays of other Adobe reonstruction in the area.

Absolutely a great place to look back on the past. No pressure, not commercialized. Just a way to remember what WWII was like and how our grandparents/parents went through that period. One way to appreciate their sacrifice, and to appreciate our freedom and way of life. Kelley park is by itself already a walk into the past century but the event multiplies that experience tenfold. Maybe not for strict history buffs because it is more general than a perfectly correct reenactment. Collapse

This is well worth the effort; fits all ages as for adults it's quite interesting to tour the Fallon House and Peralta Adobe which aren't open very often, and the variety of activity for children is great. I especially enjoyed the home-made tortillas. The descendants of the De Anza party are all really enthusiastic and welcoming, joyous on celebrating 'their day.' The entertainment on the stages is okay, but not exciting; otherwise I would give this 5 stars rather than 4.5. But it's free, educational, fun and uplifting all at once. Collapse
