Add Review/CommentPaul Rubas was born in 1954 in the Czech Republic. In 1968 his family left for Germany during the Russian invasion and in 1972 emigrated to New Jersey. He graduated from Rutgers University where he studied Russian and German literature.
After graduation he became interested in furniture making, teaching himself Japanese and Western joinery. Visiting countries in Europe, Central and South America brought him in contact with their arts and artists who impressed him with their ability to express their inner selves through their art, regardless of fame or financial reward. Recognition of the same need within himself has been the driving force behind his artistic expression. With his background in languages Rubas feels mere words are limiting; art is beyond their scope.
In this exhibit his mostly metal sculptures represent elements from a lost industrial age rearranged into a new expression. Among them are Bird of Paradise, Sumo, and Totem I.
