Visual Art & Museums
Small Hands, Big Picture
June 5-July 11, 2009
As part of its continuing mission to create community through art, the Sanchez Art Center has secured grants from The Morris Stulsaft Foundation and the Crescent Porter Hale Foundation to provided visual art instruction for Sunset Ridge Elementary School. The school, which serves 558 students, has been the only school in Pacifica without art instructors for its students. This past school year, through the SAC, each of its students received a 4-week art class.
Alexandra Ostroff, who is a well-known Bay Area sculptor and mixed-media artist, was chosen to teach the classes. Ostroff, by the way, was awarded an exhibit at Sanchez in May 2008 and has also taught drawing at Sanchez Art Center. At Sunset Ridge, Ostroff taught the students handmade paper sculptures, drawing and action painting á la Jackson Pollack.

Extremely enjoyed the show. Was impressed by the amount of time and effort put into the show. Amazed at the professionalism and what can be done with photographs.

With 64 Artists, refreshments, live music, art auction and art demonstrations, this is one of the more action-packed and fun Open Studio events in the Bay Area. Although it is billed as "Pacifica Open Studios", artists from around the peninsula and bay also set up in the spacious galleries so there is plenty of variety and beautiful art for every budget. This Open Studios is the ideal size with lots to see but not an overwhelming number of artists so that it wears you out trying to see them all. Last year's event was a huge success, and this year promises to be even better. There is lots of parking at the Center and when things get really hopping you can find parking on Linda Mar Blvd. On Saturday and Sunday Open Studios are free and open to the public from 11am to 5pm. The Preview Gala on Friday, from 7pm - 9pm, costs $25 and is a benefit for the Sanchez Art Center. Collapse
