The much-anticipated third installment in the Tuna trilogy makes its professional South Bay debut at The Stage. It’s been several years since we left Bertha and Arles dancing at the end of A Tuna Christmas — did the romance blossom? Has Didi Snavley received any “cosmic” communications from R.R.’s UFO? Did Stanley make his fortune in the Albuquerque taxidermy business? These and other burning questions will be asked and answered in the side-splitting spoof of life in rural America. Along with Tuna’s perennial favorites, some new residents of the third-smallest town in Texas burst onto the scene at the Fourth of July Tuna High School class reunion.

Strong performances particularly by Jonathan Rhys Willams as Jan and Ayla Yarkut as Eleanor. I highly recommend you check out a study guide at the website if available or arrive early enough to read the program. I don't mean to discourage attendance, just that you will get more out of the production if you are more informed. Collapse

Don't let this title fool you, come in well rested, well studied, and fresh if you want to follow this 2 1/2 hour romp through 22 years of political history. I have a feeling this was a very good production of a play I understood almost none of. I can't fault the actors, productions, tech or anything other than I just felt I wasn't prepared for this piece. Excellent program notes would have helped to read before, as there is little exposition, and we are thrust into a political discussion. This is not a script that takes the intelligence of its audience for granted, dumbing down nothing! I found the personal relationships, minor subplots to be what I clung on to when the high IQ topic flew right over my head. The music "scores" the piece and doesn't seem nearly as key to the plot as the title might suggest. Go, but go VERY prepared for a high intellect evening. Collapse

A fantastic show. The actors blew me away with their performances and the show, while not the usual holiday fare, is touching and endearing. Another wonderful show from San Jose Stage.

San Jose Stage Company's "The Seafarer" left me craving a few fingers of whiskey. Normally that's a bad thing. Here it was welcome. Seafarer is a tight, crisp and funny production. It kept me glued in and never let me go. It's that rare play that combines some pretty huge ideas like heaven and hell but still manages to transition back to crude language and alcoholism without missing a beat. Well worth the visit - congratulations to the cast and director. Collapse

OK, yes, I love live theater. San Jose Stage's theater is small, intimate, and produces innovative performances - Seafarer was one not to miss. See it! (or anything at SJ Stage.)

This was our first time at the San Jose Stage Company. We enjoyed the intimate atmosphere and comfortable arrangement of the seating. We chose the play on a whim, not really knowing what to expect, and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the presentation. We enjoyed the actors and the story very much. We've attended plays around the country from high end Broadway to community theater and find ourselves gravitating to the smaller companies. We always appreciate finding another outstanding playhouse. We will return for other offerings. Collapse

I have always felt that if you can't get a group of actors to speak the accent well and consistently then maybe you should forgo the accents altogether.

I don't usually like Christmas plays because so many of them are all the same, predictable. This play at San Jose Stage Co. is a surprisingly different approach to the Christmas season, but still has something to say and leaves you with a positive feeling at the end. The actors are really believable (especially "Richard" and "Mr. Lockheart") and the whole thing was very well directed. I would recommend this to anyone who likes theater but is tired of the usual Christmas stories. Collapse
