Vocalist Madeline Eastman approaches her music with the same mindset as a jazz instrumentalist. Some singers dwell in the spotlight, delivering studied renditions of classic jazz songs, supported by backing bands of musicians who get perhaps one or two perfunctory solos per set, but Eastman’s concept places much more emphasis on group interaction and exploration. When she takes the stage, she is simply one member of her band; the real magic of her performances comes from the collective interplay and constant thrill of discovery. Her focus on improvisation and spontaneity ensure that no two performances are ever the same. Madeline has been a star of the Bay Area jazz scene for years, while gaining exposure and acclaim both nationally and internationally. Her performance at this year’s Stanford Jazz Festival is an exciting chance to hear her with a dream lineup of musicians, including her long-time pianist Randy Porter, bass phenomenon Larry Grenadier, and renowned drummer Gregory Hutchinson. Special guest Terell Stafford is a trumpeter of amazing range and inventiveness, whose improvisational bravado and dynamic stage presence enliven any performance.
