Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Performed for the first time on the Hillbarn MainStage the story is set in Western Indian Territory just after the turn of the century and the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. With these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant Oklahoma!

Caught Hillbarn's opener OKLAHOMA on Saturday 9/5, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. For such a small space, they were able to mount a fairly large production (35 people in the cast) without "cramming them in." The show is a little uneven; the leads range from great to okay, but the overall feel of is very upbeat and pleasant. Michael D. Reed is a standout as Jud Fry. It's a long show -- even with songs I've never seen before -- so be prepared. But that's Rodgers & Hammerstein. Go see it! Collapse
