There must be 525,600 reasons to experience this breathtaking re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème as it follows the triumphs and tragedies of eight young bohemians in New York’s East Village. Mark, Roger, Mimi and their urban tribe of friends and lovers search for inspiration, passion, and identity in a world rife with heartache and pain. As they face challenges of poverty, mortality and… paying the rent, they discover beauty in the grit and grime of Manhattan and come to realize life is about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today.

Given recent events here in Palo Alto, the timeliness for the run of this show is almost eerie. And I am sure that the subject matter, the accidental death of a five-year-old boy, is more than some theatre-goers can bear, and that is really too bad. The Rabbit Hole characters deal with their grief over the loss of Danny, their child/grandchild/nephew, in very different ways, and each feels remarkably true. The direction is first-rate, the individual performances compelling, and the play is haunting. This production will stay with me for a long time. Collapse

It took a while for me to ease into this play which I felt was a well written piece, that reveals relationships and circumstances slowly and methodically. Sevreal technical elements distracted me though (random outside lighting that shifted from Purple to Orange to white, lack of costume changes making it hard to place time of year or other chronology except when the script specifically called it out) from some of the solid acting moments. The husband and wife chemistry wasn't totally believable to me, even given the strained, tenuous plot circumstances, but some good moments of anger, grief, and exhaustion. Overall a moving play, that may gel and be even more so as the run goes on. Certainly anyone with children may find this to be more emotional than those that do not. Collapse

This production wasn't terrible, but it seemed strangely cast, poorly staged, and badly edited. Juliet was charming but too mature. Her stakes and that of her Romeo were too low. Tybalt was FAR too old to be playing his role, and seemed physically awkward. The cuts to the script didn't make a lot of sense and showed a lack of understanding for the themes of the play. Some of the performances, particularly those of Mercutio and Benvolio, were excellent, and the production values were good. If you want to see a production of R&J, though, I'd skip this one. It doesn't have the goods, and another is sure to come along at a different company soon. Rent Zeferelli's 1970 film version for now and bide your time. Collapse

The characters were not cast very well. Juliet seemed too old for the role and she played off of romeo with a sense of motherly control. I could not see the beleivabilty in the look of Juliet's complexion in comparison to her parents. Romeo had a lot of good energy, but he played the role a bit to casual and delivered every soliloquy to the fourth wall with such a carefree attitude. Hard to believe there was a tragedy at all.The first scene where Juliet and Romeo meet was some of the worst staging I have ever seen It took eons for Juliet to make her way across the dance floor towards Romeo. When Romeo takes her in his arms, it is directly in front of Lady Capulet and Paris (two characters who should have interjected had they seen this)There was no innocence in Juliet's behavior towards Romeo. It was like watching two people in a club.Juliet only portrayed anger I did not believe any one was in love in this play which gives the ending nothing. This show is wonderful. First of all, it is visually STUNNING. The set is lovely and creates a suitable atmosphere for this emotionally charged play. THE COSTUMES ARE AMAZING!!! Everyone looks period appropriate and absolutely sparkling. The men are extremely handsome and dapper and the ladies are gorgeous! The cast is very endearing. I loved everyone; each character contributed to the overall success of the show. Sepideh Moafi as Juliet is overall BEAUTIFUL. She glows on stage and oh wow, her voice! Her interactions with Romeo are fun and heartbreaking, and I especially loved her relationship with the nurse. They work quite well together. Paul Jennings as Tybalt utterly commands the stage. The fights are exciting and scary--in a good way of course! Joshua Messick is hilarious in his roles as Peter and Samson, and Shannon Warrick as the Nurse is a huge standout--a very honest performance. Andrew Gruen as Romeo is absoultely charming and lively. Don't miss this show! Collapse

I attended a Friday night performance with a group of friends. We decided to go based on the number one rating the show had on Artsopolis, and because we had come to expect top-notch productions from Palo Alto Players. I do not like to post negative reviews of Community Theatre productions, since I know the shows are presented by volunteers and there is a certain amount of Community Service involved in putting on shows like this. However, I think it is unfair to charge so much per ticket for shows that are third-rate, at best, by any community theatre standards. The script was not very good, the performances were not believable, funny or entertaining. The set looked thrown together and cheap. Maybe if the tickets were $10, this would have been acceptable, but for over $30 per ticket, we expected a higher quality show. My friends and I left at intermission, which I don't think I have ever done before (and I see a lot of theatre). Collapse
