San Joséans have long had their pick of the best in stage and screen entertainment. In the late 19th through the mid-20th centuries, theatres were beloved places. Most of the early theatres built in San José exist only in photographs, many exhibited in this book for the first time. A few, such as the palatial California Theatre and the venerable José Theatre, serve exciting new uses in today’s entertainment marketplace. Join local author Gary Lee Parks as he takes us through San Jose’s early theaters and 5-cent movie houses before moving on to the glory days of San José movie palaces from the 1920s to the 1940s. Copies of Mr. Parks’ book will be available for purchase and signing!
