It’s June, 1924, and you are cordially invited for a weekend at the House of Bliss (that is, actress Judith Bliss and her colorful family). Champagne, charades, and shenanigans will ensue. This young, lighter-than-air (and twice as bubbly) play is written by Noel Coward.

This production each year is always a surprise. Some of the pieces are great, some of them not, sometimes the ensemble shines, sometimes not so much. I never know what to expect. This year I liked it quite a bit and though these pieces which are 8 short 10-15 minute plays seem to me to always go on JUST a bit to long, I was entertained by more pieces this year than I have been for several years now. Additionally, this year I saw new faces acting at the pear, and they were good fits to the intimate space, and to the variety of the pieces. If you have never been to Pear Slices before, this would be a good introduction to the local writing talent here and you might even see some actors you've never seen before! Collapse

I would encourage people to attend this performance. The actors envelope this story with superb performances.

This is the first time I've been disappointed at the Pear--but it was quite a disappointment! This is undoubtedly a difficult play to do for a modern audience, but the director's take on it made the situation worse than if the play had been done traditionally. I generally enjoy clever "modern" interpretations, but in this case the costumes were distracting, the music was irritating, and the (often talented) cast seemed generally confused and misguided. By all means, continue to support the Pear--but just send a donation, or buy a ticket and throw it away; don't waste an evening watching this play. Collapse

Rebecca Ennals, director, and her cast did a wonderful job in bringing a complex comedy to life in a small theatre space. An ingenious adaptation of the opening monologue with tableaux helped to clarify relationships and to set the stage for an unconventional approach to the play. Actors play multiple roles and each character is distinct and delightful. Great costumes by Pat Tyler also added to the fun. The main thing is to enjoy what you see and hear and don't worry if you don't catch everything. After all, that is just the Way of the World. Collapse

No beef with any of the individual performances and I enjoy the script, but the feel of the show, the chemisty and the look, was a bit confusing. The connection to our own time was hinted at but not a strong enough statement was made I think then to have the modern music, sunglasses, and "celebrity" reference be anything other than a distraction and a detriment to the piece. It might have served the talent better to reverse the take with HINTS and homage to the original restoration (the corsets are back in vougue) but place the majority of the technical design elements in today. 3 hours is long and when pressed to make mental leaps for connections and purpose for that long it tends to become more chore than entertainment. The chemistry between folks wasn't all there the performance I saw, but a hardworking cast with some standout moments make it worth a look, particularly if you like Restoration Comedy. Collapse

Painful performance overall. #7, couple/piano, I'm clueless as to what it was about; lacked clarity.

I'll chock this performance up to some challenges all around but ultimately not my favorite of the slices for sure. What I felt were all actually interesting ideas in theory in many cases were not executed through the actual writing, acting, and directing. In some instances the over the top acting detracted from the plays, and in others the repetition of the writing (which could easily have been fixed with even minor editing) detracted from an otherwise enjoyable acting performance. That said there are an assortment of genres, topics, and abilities here that the Pear is great about highlighting, and you are likely to find some bright spots that appeal to you. I very much support the ideas in these plays as being worthy of experimenting with but I felt many of these, for whatever reason, were still in an unpolished state. Collapse

The pros of this show are great writing, solid acting, and attention to details on the set, the cons are a result of this being a very small space and a technically ambitious project. The crew (and cast) approach this challenge ferouciously and in many cases succeed and even impress, but there are times when the stage was just too crowded and posed too many unnatural blocking challenges for the three member cast. The night I saw it, the volume of the music between scenes from the front row was PAINFUL, all the way through. It could be argued that was the intent, but I was totally turned off but what were actaully great song choices becuase they were just too loud. Pacing wise some of the most brilliant and visual text you will hear zoomed by too quickly, but overall there were plenty of enjoyable things (comic timing, and some wonderfully quirky, uninhibited moments from Alan Kaiser) that made this show standout.
