Variations on a Theme is an expansive presentation of works by 30-40 contemporary artists mostly based in California, organized in thematic groupings, which tentatively include the environment and sustainability; the urban landscape; stories of people and the body politic; labor-intensive artistic techniques; and faith and spirituality. This exhibition showcases pivotal works from the collection, some of which have never before been on view, and highlights the Museum’s core mission of supporting the work of California artists. Included as well will be several newly commissioned works made especially for San Jose by exciting emerging artists. The exhibition presents work in all media, ranging from painting to ceramics to digital landscapes, in groupings designed to encourage illuminating comparisons and self-reflection.
