Chuck Close Prints - Process and Collaboration
October 6, 2009-January 10, 2010
Chuck Close has revolutionized both contemporary portraiture and printmaking. Close made his first print as a professional artist in 1972 and printmaking soon became an important and most fruitful, experimental aspect of his artistic endeavor. His innovation in printmaking is now legendary. Close was particularly concerned that his prints not simply be smaller versions of his paintings, but rather that printmaking open up an additional arena of investigation that would require him to engage in image-making in completely different ways.
In addition to including finished prints, this exhibition features full suites of Close’s preliminary proofs and various states of editions. Also on view will be the woodblocks and etching plates for several of the more complex images he has created. The exhibition is no less than a stellar investigation into the mechanics of perception and virtuoso artistic process.
The exhibition was organized by Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston. It has been seen at such venues as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; the San Jose Museum of Art is the only northern California venue.

Extremely disappointed that it is sold out! Please find a way to extend the opportunity to the large audience that wish to hear him speak. Pod Cast, video tape, partner with local public TV, move it to a larger venue for the talk, be creative! His fans don't have many chances to learn from his personal view... he's one of our own California gems and should be shared broadly. Please don't ignore this great opportunity to spread his word in a larger manner to more people now, and for future fans he will inspire years from now. Thanks. Collapse

"Thiebaud talk booked completely...what a shame..!!"

I did not realize Wayne Thiebaud event was a paid one as I would have bought tickets very early. That's too bad. Leaves a bad taste for me with regards to the San Jose Museum.

Since this was sold out so quickly, maybe you could video the event, or KQED or KTEH might be interested. I'm soooo sorry to miss it.

"Humor in the Details"

Give yourself plenty of time to walk through this exhibit as the REAL art is in the details. So much fun and gorgeous color and texture! Fantastic!

I am doing a report on this show for my art history class. I was surprised when I first looked at the artwork. It was slightly non-cohesive and over my head at first, but once I got to the room with the same picture in different colors (The End), the show came together. Intelligent, poignant comments were under each picture, pointing out something different about The End each time. Visually, it was not super interesting, however a closer look shows that the artists are very smart, creative people. Collapse

I appreciated the clarity of Garcia's vision, and her passion for her subject was evident in everything she drew and painted. But after a while all the works began to resemble each other too closely; I felt battered by the same strident tirade against suburbia over and over. Perhaps the exhibit could have used fewer works, or showed the artist's range by also including works with different themes. Collapse

I went to see the Escher exhibit and was surprised to see my scribbles and doodles all over the walls. As a little girl I needed to doodle all the time and became tried of thinking of things to draw. I must have thrown away a million of these works of art forty some years ago! I am an elementary school art teacher now. I guess it is true... if you call it art, then it is art. It was very interesting to see along with the Escher exhibit but of course it is clear who exhibits the true talent. Wonderful museum, wonderful city, most enjoyable. I would recommend to any art enthusist. Collapse

there is so much going on in this exhibit--i loved the interactive nature of most of the works. the exhibit set up is also really remarkable and extremely well designed--if you appreciate museum design and installation, this is reason enough to see the show. the museum experience reps were also very kind and helpful, they answered questions without stealing the show, a rare and fabulous museum-going experience. we really enjoyed ourselves! even took the time to leave a positive comment card! looking forward to a second visit.
