Interior Passages: Paintings & Monotypes by Cindy Blain. With her sometimes shadowy and sometimes vivid figures in ambiguous space, Cindy Blain explores questions of identity and intention...introspective questions that haunt us all if we take the time to ask them. The architectural features frequently found in Blain’s imagery emphasize the idea of interior spaces and chambers, alternately suggesting the safety of such rooms or their restrictive quality. Her work doesn’t describe, but merely suggests -- letting the viewer complete the image. Her watercolor and gouache paintings are created using a combination of wax resist, watercolor crayons and watercolor pencils. Most of her monotypes are also made with watercolor pigment and crayons. Monotypes are a little-known medium involving the transfer to paper of an image painted on a smooth printmaking plate. Monotypes are called “the painterly print” and were used extensively by Edgar Degas and William Merrit Chase as well as by contemporary artists Nathan Oliveira and Matt Phillips. Blain's art education includes study with artists in Mississippi, Louisiana, and California. She received a B.A. in Art History from Rice University in Texas and an M.B.A. from Georgia State University. Blain is currently president of the Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society and a founding member of ARTsummit, a coalition of art association leaders. She joined Viewpoints Gallery in March of this year. Artist Reception: Sunday, Oct. 3rd, 1 -5pm.
