    Up until mid-1934, Hollywood films routinely trafficked in sex, drugs, and violence, while stunned audiences often watched in shock and disbelief. Eventually a strict, studio-enforced production code was established and rigid guidelines were put into place.

    Enjoy watching and discussing this provocative quartet of films, all pre-code, and learn why so many Americans were disturbed by what Hollywood was churning out: frank, sexually explicit Depression-era dramas that realistically reflected life. Instructor: Elliot Lavine has taught American film courses at Stanford, UC Berkeley and San Francisco State University.
