One of the all-time great American musicals, and winner of 3 Tony® Awards, Gypsy is a mega-watt hit! Based on the autobiography of the world-famous burlesque stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, the show centers on her relationship with her mother, Rose, who drove her to fame and fortune. Let's just say, she is the reigning queen of stage mothers. No one else in musical theatre comes close! Everything's Coming Up Roses, Let Me Entertain You, and Some People are just a sampling of this phenomenal score.

"Almost Everything Comes Up Roses for AMT's"

"Ya gotta get a gimmick!" Clearly, the team at AMT has taken this advice to heart in their rousing, highly entertaining, and thoroughly brassy production of "Gypsy." Director Bair pulls out all the stops for this show and has found a vocal powerhouse in Marya Grandy as Mama Rose. Her Ethel Merman like pipes, however cannot compensate for the lack of depth and lack of chemistry among the leads. The Louise and Herbie characters are underplayed and unsatisfying, while the performances are all too squeaky clean and overexaggerated to be interesting. There is redeeming value in a titillating stripper number that brings down the house, beautiful sets, Mr. Liberatore's top flight orchestra, and some wonderful choreography by Mr. Rintala. Overall, a professionally done show that entertains with polished songs and dances, but fails to realize the full emotional potential of this richly complex musical. Collapse

"Great! Not-so-great"

Great voice on Mama Rose. Not-so-great acting. (And she started out looking about 35, but never aged!) Great score and orchestra. Not-so-great delivery of the songs by a few. (The Strippers were wonderful, as they should be!) Great job by Tulsa and Herbie. Not-so-great job by Uncle Jocko and Gypsy. All in all an enjoyable experience, but I expected more from this time-tested musical. Collapse

American Musical Theater of San Jose presents-- a high school rendition of Gypsy. Actually I've seen better performances come from high school students so I apologize to all theater kids. The Rose character was as flat as-- flat, luckily the character of Rose is so twisted and "real" that it carried her. Her voice wasn't half bad except it didn't fit the role. Sometimes she played it 1/3 Ethel Merman, sometimes she played it half assed Bette Midler. But the crazy mother that lives vicariously through her offspring never really fully made it across. Now as for the Gypsy character, ah Gypsy, not what I expected from the character at all. She lacked strength on stage and her acting was horrible (sorry). In fact the majority of the acting plain sucked. Can anyone in this ensemble cast deliver a line? All the timing was off. There are funny lines in this musical but the majority of them were missed due to timing and delivery. I did enjoy the Chorus boys and Herbie. Collapse

I saw the dress rehearsal performance of this show and loved it. What a treat in this day and age to see one of the best musicals of all time performed with a live orchestra. Marya Grandy was superb as Mama Rose—what a terrific voice! I was also particularly impressed with the singing and dancing of Matt Bauer (if I’m not mistaken) playing the role of “Tulsa” in a tour de force solo number. Overall the quality of staging and performance was very good. It’s a great story, very engaging, with some good laughs, and one of the best collections of tunes ever. This is the pinnacle of a very American art form, and seeing it like this was a genuine thrill. “If ya gonna bump it, do it with a trumpet!” Collapse
