One of the all-time great American musicals, and winner of 3 TonyŽ Awards, Gypsy is a mega-watt hit! Based on the autobiography of the world-famous burlesque stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, the show centers on her relationship with her mother, Rose, who drove her to fame and fortune. Let's just say, she is the reigning queen of stage mothers. No one else in musical theatre comes close! Everything's Coming Up Roses, Let Me Entertain You, and Some People are just a sampling of this phenomenal score.

The Flower Drum Song revival by renown playwright David Henry Huang demonstrates the best of the best in musical theater. The simple yet visually stunning sets showed creativity without getting in the way of the story. And the story tweaked to more contemporary sensibilities still showcased the brilliance of the Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes which is at the heart strings of this dynamic rendition. Kudos to AMT for taking a bold step in bringing this broadway hit to Silicon Valley. Collapse

Boring and stiff. The lines were delivered with no feeling or understanding of what they meant. A total waste of time and money.

Just wanted to say that a friend took me to see "The Full Monty" on Tuesday and it is the most I have laughed in a long long time. It is funny, touching and poignant! I kept thinking that not only is it a really fun night out for the girls because...well there are naked men, but also a perfect date night with the hubby because it has a very touching love story underneath. That was the most I have laughed at a San Jose show! Don't miss it. Collapse

Great production of a silly show. All the production values were first class. I just wish that I could have heard the performers. I could not get one word from the Urchins(Chiffon, Ronnette, and Crystal). Super costumes designed by the fabulous Tommy Marquez and workable sets. It was nice to see the stage hands dressed in costumes rather than the usual black outfits. Maybe there is hope. Wonderful choreography by the director Gabriel Barre.Where are the San Jose people? From the credits, it certainly did not look like a local show. Collapse

I've not been very happy with the AMTSJ shows over the last few years. Admittedly I'm a harsh critic when it comes to big budget shows that don't always use the copious local talent, but this was a very well done production of a wonderful musical. You can't help but love the songs, and they don't skimp on the dance numbers or the costumes. They were having fun and doing a great job of entertaining. It's so nice to hear an orchestra that is flawless, and even from row 18 I could feel the energy. THIS is the kind of caliber show that can repair the reputation of a company almost over night. They even had the sound/mics almost entirely pitched and volumed correctly which is a huge chore for such a large venue. It's a pretty price, but it's a lovely piece. Finally! Well done AMTSJ. I saw a dress rehearsal. Already it is stunning. The performances are wonderful. I particularly enjoyed the actress playing Miss Adelaide (too bad programs weren't available, but they should be ready by opening night). I also especially enjoyed the scene in Havana, "A Bushel and a Peck", "Luck Be a Lady", and "Marry the Man Today". But really, all the songs are great. There is a reason why this musical is a classic, and AMTSJ does it justice. Collapse

Michael York's star power (and that voice) made it worthwhile, as did Jame's Barbour's Lance, though the rest of the production seemed at times heavy- handed (the fight scenes) and at others rushed (all the scenes with Mordred). I don't know if York isn't settled into the role yet, or if the director just didn't want to overtax him, but his Arthur sadly missed many opportunities and simply lacks range and depth. You're never really made to care about these people and at the end of the show it felt very much like "Camelot-by-the-numbers". Collapse

We thought this show was dreary. If it was a $20 ticket local show, we would say, "oh well, you get what you pay for". For $70 a ticket (that's right!), it was an embarassment. The idea that this show might go to Broadway is laughable. The "perfect" knight Lancelot couldn't even pull his sword out of his scabbard cleanly! What was worse than the show was having to endure the pre-curtain plea for money from AMTSJ's Executive Director. After taking $2mil from the public coffers (imagine if San Jose divied that money up 20 ways, $100k a piece, to some WORTHY local theater groups!), to plead poverty in front of 1000 or more patrons who already paid $30-75 a ticket and were about to see a second-rate touring company production, it was the height of audacity. When AMTSJ gets its act together, stops bringing in so-called professional shows that don't cut it and starts doing its own shows with local talent, I might consider donating again. Until then, not a chance. Collapse
