MACLA presents a special screening of The Ghost Riders, directed by San Jose native Vincent Blackhawk Aamodt and narrated by San Francisco native Benjamin Bratt. Local youth are invited to meet the filmmaker and the cast after the screening. The documentary follows several youth from the Lakota Nation as they honor their ancestors with a 300-mile trek on horseback that cuts through the heart of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (South Dakota) in the middle of December. The journey, known as "The Bigfoot Memorial Ride," is a spiritual journey that started in 1986 to help the Lakota Nation "wipe the tears" shed for the massacre of Lakota men, women and children at Wounded Knee in 1890, and for more recent hardships. Participants convey the ride's spirit of sacrifice and remembrance, and the Lakota people's determination to build a better future. Now a younger generation has made a vow to keep the ride going and keep the memory of their people alive as they begin to mend the sacred hoop. Vincent Blackhawk Aamodt has received many awards for directorial excellence including Best of Show at the Addy Awards. In 1997, he was selected to represent the U.S. in Cannes, France in a worldwide creative competition. Vincent was recently selected for an ABC TV directing fellowship, through the Director's Guild of America, out of more than 700 entries.
