Add Review/CommentWhat happens when William Cubbert is paid a surprise visit by the man who saved his life in combat? What happens when the man turns out to be a hopeless nerd, with little intelligence and even less tact? And what happens when he stays on, and on, and on, refusing to leave? The answer is one uproarious, gut-busting comedy with a surprise ending that will have you screaming with delight! Playwright Larry Shue began his career as an actor working with the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. After writing a successful revue-style piece for the company, he was made Resident Playwright. His plays GRANDMA DUCK IS DEAD (a one-act play), WENCESLAS SQUARE, THE NERD, and THE FOREIGNER received their premieres at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre. Shue's three full-length plays moved on to successful productions in London, New York, and around the country. THE FOREIGNER received two Obie awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards (Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway production) in 1985. WENCELSAS SQUARE won Shue an L.A. Drama Critics Award for Best Writing in 1989. Shue's other works include SILIASOCLES and MY EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES. Larry Shue died in a commuter plane crash in 1985 at the age of 39. His plays THE NERD and THE FOREIGNER stand more than two decades later as well-loved and often-performed comedy classics. City Lights Theater Company's production of THE NERD is directed by Will Huddleston. The team that brings the farce to City Lights includes Resident Set Designer Ron Gasparinetti, Resident Lighting Designer Brendan Bartholomew, Costume Designer Joanne Martin, and Properties Designers Raegena Raymond and Clary Alward. The cast includes Stephen Boisvert (HEROES) as the perennial nice-guy Willum Cubbert, Katie O'Bryon (WHAT THE BUTLER SAW) as his sometimes-girlfriend Tansy and newcomer Michael Farnia as his best friend Axel. George S. Gemette (ASSASSINS, Richard O'Brien's THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW) appears as Willum's overbearing boss, with Nicole Y. Hamilton (THE WAITING ROOM) and young actor Morgan Clarke as Waldgrave's wife and son. Rounding out this talented cast in his first City Lights appearance is Noel Wood as Rick Steadman, the hopeless nerd whose hijinks and hilarity confound Willum and his guests all the way to a delightful surprise ending!
