Invention at Play explores the playful side of invention and the inventive side of play. Visitors will learn how play – the ordinary and everyday “work of childhood” – connects to the creative impulse of both historic and contemporary inventors. The exhibition was developed by the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Through stories, photos, hands-on activities, and artifacts, Invention at Play presents inventors and innovators who have used playful and creative techniques in their work, such as Stephanie Kwolek, the chemist who invented Kevlar®; Newman Darby, inventor of the sailboard; Alexander Graham Bell; and the product design company IDEO.
