Flags and popular interpretations of our flag’s motif will be on view during the Museum’s up-coming exhibit, Hooray for the Red, White and Blue! The colorful decorative and graphic arts exhibit will feature the flag-themed collection of Kit Hinrichs, a well-known graphic artist and collector. As part of a newly-designed staging of the J. Gilbert Smith House, other local collections of flag-themed artifacts will be displayed. As the seasons change, the spotlight will shift from summer to holiday themes. Flag-inspired historic and traditional Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas decorations will be featured, changing the look of both the exhibit and the J. Gilbert Smith House. As a visual symbol, America’s flag is a distinct and compelling icon, recognizable in its simplest forms of color juxtapositions or its pattern of stripes and stars. Its striking graphics ensure any use of the flag instant recognition. Visitors will enjoy the fantastic array of items that proudly display some form of the stars and stripes – weathervanes to jewelry, Navajo weavings to games. Just a sampling of the rich history of the use of our flag’s motif will be on view during the exhibit.
