A skillfully crafted, lovingly evoked picture of eccentricity in the small-town South. The action is set in Truvy's Beauty Salon in Chiquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when Shelby, a diabetic, risks pregnancy and endangers her life. The sudden realization of their own mortality affects them all, and draws on their underlying strength—and love.
