The Little Theater's Production of Hamlet
May 12-June 3, 2006
A sophisticated New York director with a successful Off Broadway season under her belt reluctantly travels to West Virginia to direct Hamlet under the auspices of a grant for ‘‘under-served regions.’’ Gathering in Hattie’s Restaurant, this group perpetrates a harrowing production of Shakespeare. Amazing costumes and merry mishaps ladle hilarity on top of sincere attempts to tailor Hamlet to this remarkable cast. The play is the thing, and the result is a fractured, quixotic play, that provides a fine example of realizing the impossible dream.

Although SCP has to deal with the challenges their venue poses they are able to pull off a worthy production of Proof. The actors have a clear understanding of their characters and bring the individual psychosis to life. There seemed to be some line issues with everyone but when there was an issue it was handled well. It will most certainly get better as the run continues. The program does not spell out the individual scenes so if one is not familiar with the show it may take a little time (not much) to realize that some scenes take place in a different time period. Why doesn't SCP perform at the black box at Willcox High? The quality of their productions would increase 10 fold and people may actually be able to find the theater. There isn't any signage at the Triton indicating where the show is actually taking place, I almost went to a wedding! Collapse

My husband and I attended a Saturday Night showing of The Constant Wife on our recent anniversary. We were so pleasantly surprised to enjoy a witty, sarcastic, intelligent, and well-played dramatic presentation. All actors involved were perfect for the part, and the emotion was so raw you felt as if the situations were happening to you! I felt as if, for just a few hours, I was transported to another world, where I was secretly witness to an amazingly complex, twisted and surprising turn of events, that should, in all honesty, be of a private nature. The show was impeccable! Collapse

This is a production that is dotted with arbitrary blocking, and some major inconsistancies and certainly some confusing choices, but a few standout performances and a wonderful script certainly makes this an enjoyable evening of light chuckles. Though I think it would have suited the production better to underplay the quintessentially British humor, rather than error on the side of meoldrama, still, I found the charming dialogue enough to carry this community production. this short, lighthearded, almost melodramatic play is not complex but certainly humorous. A handful of delightful performances standout in a production that is not polished, but doesn't need to be either. Silly yes, deep, no. Most reactions are over the top, but as long as you know going into this it's fluffy, I think you find it asmuing. Collapse
