Located in Rosicrucian Park at Park and Naglee Avenues (entrance on Park Avenue), the Planetarium shows are being presented Tuesday through Sunday at 2 pm (closed Mondays) with additional shows on Saturday and Sunday at 3:30 pm. Admission is complimentary. Tickets may be picked up at the admissions desk of the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum.

About the show "The Mithraic Mysteries"
Of the many riddles left to us by antiquity, none is more intriguing than that of the ancient Roman religion known as the Mithraic mysteries. The teachings of this ancient Roman "mystery religion" of Mithraism were guarded with the utmost secrecy, revealed only to select initiates. While the Mithraists never wrote down their secret doctrines, they did leave a key to them in the arcane iconography, which filled the walls of their underground temples. Until now, all attempts to decipher this iconography have proven fruitless. Most experts have been content with a vague hypothesis that these images somehow derived from ancient Iranian religion.

In a groundbreaking work, Dr. David Ulansey has recently offered a radically different theory. He argues that Mithraic iconography was actually an astronomical code, and that the cult began as a religious response to a startling scientific discovery. We present his theory of the mysteries concealed in Mithraic temple carvings that could reveal the central secret of the cult: a secret consisting of an ancient vision of the ultimate nature of the universe.

Toddler Story Times at the Rose Garden Branch Library are designed for children 2 to 3 years of age. Come enjoy a program of stories, rhymes and activities. On the first Thursday of every month, we replace Story Time with Sing Along!

To ensure a rewarding experience for all who attend story time, we encourage you and your child to arrive on time, listen attentively, and participate. Adults are asked to sit with their child until the child is comfortable. We encourage parents and children to check out books after the program. We hope story time and reading becomes an important part of your family's activities.

Exciting commissions of new Northwest Coast art also go on view. Precolumbian art display is enhanced by the addition of an important collection of Mesoamerican works, a recent gift to the Center.

Hank Willis Thomas and Kambui Olujimi's Winter in America project consists of a stop-motion animation video and still photographs that work together to depict the 2002 robbery and murder of Thomas' cousin Songha Thomas Willis. This tragic event is enacted by G.I. Joe action figures - which were ironically used by the artists as children to play out violent narratives. The resulting work is chillingly powerful - a dramatic statement about violence in African American communities. At the same time, the work directly critiques our culture's relationship with violence - its prevalence in simulated forms in mass culture and its longstanding presence in the toys of our youth.

Hank Willis Thomas received a B.F.A. in Photography from New York University in 1998 and an M.F.A. in Photography and a M.A. in Visual Criticism from the California College of the Arts in 2004. His work has been featured in exhibitions at institutions throughout the United States such as the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Studio Museum of Harlem.

Kambui Olujimi received his B.F.A. from Parsons School of Design. His work has been featured in museum exhibitions on a national and international level, at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki.

With his unique combinations of painting and drawing, San Francisco-based Evri Kwong explores the role of violence in our culture. His works combine idealistic landscape paintings juxtaposed with frenzied figurative sketches in grid-like compositions. In the sketches, rendered in permanent Sharpie ink-Howdy-Doody-style, puppets interact, fight, and brutalize each other. Kwong's landscapes provide a moment of respite from the figurative struggles, but then challenge us to consider the reality underlying some facades, or the stark difference between our idealized visions of our communities, and their often darker reality. Evri Kwong received his B.A. and M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has also been the recipient of a Fellowship from the Showhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at Smith Andersen Editions, the Triton Museum of Art, and Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco.

The New Orleans Museum of Art has gathered approximately 80 of its finest works of European and American art from the late 16th to the mid 20th century for this rare exhibition. Among them are paintings and sculpture by Francois Boucher, Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miro, Claude Monet, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Pierre Auguste Renoir, John Singer Sargent, Giambattista Tiepolo, and Elisabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun.

The vast majority of this collection survived the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This exhibition celebrates the European and American portion of NOMA's distinguished and diverse holdings.
