Lively Arts welcomes South African singer-songwriter/poet/activist Vusi Mahlasela. Reared in Mamelodi Township, he gravitated toward poetry and songwriting as a teen, eventually joining youth organizations protesting South Africa’s separatist, white government. Reading poems at night vigils, funerals and anti-Apartheid marches triggered a long streak of police harassment.

After 20 years as an Air Force fighter pilot, Brian Shul today is an accomplished author, speaker, and photographer. In the Viet Nam War, he flew 212 missions before his aircraft was shot down. Unable to eject, he was severely burned in the crash. Rescued by Special Forces, he was given little chance of survival. He spent one year in hospitals enduring 15 reconstructive surgeries and countless hours of physical therapy. Miraculously he was able to return to flying Air Force fighter jets and went on to become an air show demonstration pilot and eventually a TOPGUN instructor.

He culminated his Air Force career by flying our nations premier spy plane, the SR-71. This was a remarkable accomplishment considering that only 93 men in history got to fly this aircraft. Brian flew the Blackbird for 4 years and was the pilot who provided key photos of Kaddafi’s terrorist camps to President Reagan during the Libyan Crisis in 1986.

Brian retired from the Air Force in 1990, and pursued his writing and photography interests. He was the first Blackbird pilot to write a book about flying that plane, illustrated with his own photography. It is today hailed as the definitive essay on the SR-71 and was awarded Aviation Book of the Year by Smithsonian Magazine.

Brian's remarkable comeback story has inspired audiences nationwide and his collection of SR-71 photographs are now considered the rarest in the world.

In the Air Force, Brian flew the T-38, F-5B, A1-E, AT-28D, A-7D, A-10, F-100, and SR-71. He is currently President of Gallery One in Marysville, CA

Mexico City, the mother of all megacities, is known for chaos, overpopulation, and an extreme gap between rich and poor. John Ross—poet, journalist, activist—first visited the city in 1957 with fellow Bay Area Beats as an expatriate escape. He eventually moved to the place he has come to call “The Monster” just one week after the devastating earthquake of 1985, which killed 30,000 people. El Monstruo is his gritty, vibrant People’s History of 23 million, told from the ground up.

El Monstruo is both a tribute and an indictment, speaking to peoples’ heroes and class warfare, culture and crime, urban beauty and blight, the underbelly and the overclass, environmental degradation and courageous growth, fear and loathing, dread and redemption, hope and corruption. Ross demonstrates that social forces, not luminaries, drive history as he delves into Mexico City from its geologic beginnings to the Left City it has become in the last decade. Along the way, he explores the rise and fall of the Tenochtitlan and Aztec civilizations, European conquest and genocide, the War of Independence, the Yanqui Invasion (the so-called Mexican War of 1848), three revolutions and their resulting carnage, the Great Depression, the so-called “Mexican Miracle,” social revolts of the 1960’s and 70’s, the Great Electoral Fraud, the foibles of NAFTA, and the Swine Flu Panic of 2009.

Ross’s last book, Murdered Capitalism was called a “must read” by NPR’s Talk of the Nation and a “Best Book of 2004” by the San Francisco Chronicle. Ross’s fifty years covering Mexico for an array of Mexican and U.S. publications including the San Francisco Bay Guardian, The Nation, and The Progressive put him in an extraordinary position to tell the complete story of its capital with great insight, and with his quixotic passion and poet’s touch he brings a beat to the narrative that is both of the city and of himself.

A lyrically intense fifth collection from "one of the nation's most provocative and edgy poets" (San Diego Union-Tribune). With both passion and precision, Lucifer at the Starlite explores life’s dual nature: good and evil, light and dark, suffering and moments of unexpected joy. Whether looking outward to events on the world stage—the war in Iraq, the 2004 Asian tsunami—or inward at struggles with the self, these poems aim at the heart and against the feeling that Lucifer may have already won the day.

Winner of the 2008 Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize. Enacting the Zen proverb "fall down seven times, get up eight," this collection explores the ways we fall--through disillusionment, disappointment, and plain, old-fashioned mistakes, and the ways we rise up--out of personal debacles, unfortunate circumstances, family legacies, and collective struggles.

The Belgian artist Georges Remi's (Hergé) legendary creation, Tintin, is a figure whose adventures have enchanted readers in Europe for the last 80 years. The series is one of the most popular European comics of the twentieth century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date. With the proliferation of Tintin blogs, Steven Spielberg's and Peter Jackson's planned cinematographic adaptations, and a Tintin museum scheduled to open in Belgium in the near future, there are many signs that the popularity of Hergé's boy hero continues to grow.

The Metamorphoses of Tintin is the English translation of the first critical study of the canonical Tintin cartoons. Published in French in 1984 and republished many times since, this pioneering work examines the long career of both the cartoonist and his creation.

After the Second World War, Tintin's adventures became more psychological than political, thus appealing to a wider range of readers. He left behind the real world and came to occupy the center of a fictional universe where he tirelessly championed the underdog. A figure without origins, he turned international hero at the very moment that Western nations were becoming homogenized and transmitting their commodities and values on a global scale. Arguing that the series of albums thus offers a reflection on the whole of twentieth-century life, Jean-Marie Apostolidès traces the evolution of Tintin's character and reveals the unity of Hergé's masterpiece.

Nicole Salgado of Mexican and European ancestry grew up in Central New York. When she came to live in the Bay Area, she was exposed to authentic Mexican cooking via friends and family members. She moved to her husband’s home state of Querétaro, Central Mexico in 2006, where she became part of an extended Queretaro family and was introduced to traditional methods for cultivating and utilizing maize. In an effort to combine their passion for good food with environmental health, she and her husband cultivate an organic home garden and small animal production among other sustainable practices.

This exceptional graphic novel recounts the spiritual odyssey of philosopher Bertrand Russell. In his agonized search for absolute truth, Russell crosses paths with legendary thinkers like Gottlob Frege, David Hilbert, and Kurt Gödel, and finds a passionate student in the great Ludwig Wittgenstein. But his most ambitious goal—to establish unshakable logical foundations of mathematics—continues to loom before him. Through love and hate, peace and war, Russell persists in the dogged mission that threatens to claim both his career and his personal happiness, finally driving him to the brink of insanity.

This story is at the same time a historical novel and an accessible explication of some of the biggest ideas of mathematics and modern philosophy. With rich characterizations and expressive, atmospheric artwork, the book spins the pursuit of these ideas into a highly satisfying tale.

Probing and ingeniously layered, the book throws light on Russell’s inner struggles while setting them in the context of the timeless questions he spent his life trying to answer. At its heart, Logicomix is a story about the conflict between an ideal rationality and the unchanging, flawed fabric of reality.

Christos H. Papadimitriou is C . Lester Hogan professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. He has won numerous international awards for his pioneering work in computational complexity and algorithmic game theory. He has written the novel Turing: A Novel about Computation.

What could be fancier than Christmas? Presents with elegant wrapping paper, festive decorations, Christmas cookies with sprinkles—and who could forget the tree? After all, there is no such thing as too much tinsel. Ooh la la! This year, Nancy is especially excited about decorating the Christmas tree. She bought a brand-new sparkly tree topper with her own money and has been waiting for Christmas to come. But when things don't turn out the way Nancy planned, will Christmas still be splendiferous?

In this merriest of stories, Nancy proves once again that a little fancying up can go a long, festive way!

It was made like a television movie, and completed in less than three months. It killed off its star in forty minutes. There was no happy ending. And it offered the most violent scene to date in American film, punctuated by shrieking strings that seared the national consciousness. Nothing like Psycho had existed before; the movie industry—even America itself—would never be the same.

In The Moment of Psycho, film critic David Thomson situates Psycho in Alfred Hitchcock’s career, recreating the mood and time when the seminal film erupted onto film screens worldwide. Thomson shows that Psycho was not just a sensation in film: it altered the very nature of our desires. Sex, violence, and horror took on new life. Psycho, all of a sudden, represented all America wanted from a film—and, as Thomson brilliantly demonstrates, still does.

English-American writer David Thomson is the author of many books on film, including Have You Seen...? A Personal Introduction to 1,000 Films, which the New York Times called, “passionate, illuminating, rich, and eccentric”; and the massively influential Biographical Dictionary of Film called “the best book on the movies ever written in English” (The New Republic). He lives in San Francisco with his family.

Half the five million people in America with Alzheimer's disease are in the middle to late stages. The accepted notion of the medical establishment is that it is impossible to communicate with these individuals, and family members and friends should give up hope of being able to salvage a real relationship with their loved ones with Alzheimer's. By working with Alzheimer's patients and their families for more than sixteen years, author Judith London has learned that this is false, and, in fact, people can learn how to connect the dots of scattered information offered by people with Alzheimer's and maintain a sense of connection with their loved ones.

Compelling and inspiring anecdotes from the author's work reveal the depth of feeling and insight still present in advanced Alzheimer's patients. After each anecdote, the author explains the technique she used to draw meaning from the Alzheimer's patient's communication, then shows readers how to use it with their loved ones. The book also includes chapters of pertinent, accessible information on Alzheimer's that will help readers understand how the brain is affected by the disease.

Judith L. London, Ph.D., is a psychologist licensed in New York and California who has treated people with Alzheimer's and other dementias in public long-term care facilities for more than sixteen years. She has been adjunct professor at New York University, a stress management trainer and workshop leader, and a featured columnist on addictions. London conducts seminars on Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and maintaining brain health.

Forget everything you thought you knew about how to motivate people--at work, at school, at home. It's wrong. As Daniel H. Pink explains in his new and paradigm-shattering book, the secret to high performance and satisfaction in today's world is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does--and how that affects every aspect of our lives. He demonstrates that while the old-fashioned carrot-and-stick approach worked successfully in the 20th century, it's precisely the wrong way to motivate people for today's challenges.

Drive is bursting with big ideas-- the rare book that will change how you think and transform how you live.
Daniel H. Pink is the author of the long-running New York Times and BusinessWeek bestseller A Whole New Mind, as well as The Adventures of Johnny Bunko and Free Agent Nation. He has written for The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, Fast Company, and Wired, where he is a contributing editor. He has provided analysis for CNN, CNBC, ABC, NPR, and other networks in the U.S. and abroad. Pink lectures on economic transformation and the new workplace at corporations, associations, and universities around the world.

My Nepenthe weaves together stories and tales about the famous California restaurant perched on the majestic cliffs of Big Sur. It celebrates the magic and history of place through food and the Fassett family who started Nepenthe. In 2009 Nepenthe commemorates 60 years of bringing writers, artists, dancers, travelers, actors, and cooks together around the table. Today about 250,000 people visit Nepenthe every year.

Written by the owners' granddaughter, Romney Steele, who grew up at the restaurant, My Nepenthe marks the restaurant's vibrant past as a gathering place and noted bohemian haunt, and its foray into the film industry during the shooting of The Sandpiper, featuring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. It also explores the lively scene that played out into the '70s, and onward through the current decade where it showcases Nepenthe's unique relationship with Pisoni Vineyards, owned by the renowned winemaker family. My Nepenthe includes more than seventy-five special recipes from the Fassetts, the restaurant, and the cafe, along with spectacular photography that completes the tale.

Mickey Dade hates deskwork, but that's all he's been doing at Wyatt Hunt's private investigative service, The Hunt Club. His itch to be active is answered when a body is discovered: It's Dominic Como, one of San Francisco's most high-profile activists-a charismatic man known as much for his expensive suits as his work on a half dozen nonprofit boards. One "person of interest" in the case is Como's business associate, Alicia Thorpe-young, gorgeous, and the sister of one of Mickey's friends.

As Mickey and Hunt are pulled into the case, they soon learn that the city's golden fundraiser was involved in some highly suspect deals. And the lovely Alicia knows more about this-and more about Como-than she's letting on.

Treasure Hunt is both a nail-biting thriller and a coming-of-age story, filled with Lescroart's trademark San Francisco flavors. Mickey Dade, its young protagonist, gradually learns the hard lessons Hunt knows only too well, as the world he thought he knew unravels around him.

John Lescroart is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of twenty previous novels, including A Plague of Secrets, Betrayal, The Suspect and The Hunt Club. His books have been printed in sixteen languages and published in more than seventy-five countries.

Anywhere But L.A., Daniel A. Olivas's latest collection of short stories, ranges from contemporary narratives to more traditional cuentos de fantasma, giving us a vivid and honest portrait of modern Latinos in search of their place in the world. Funny yet poignant, Olivas's characters frequently amuse, sometimes disturb, and often remind us of our own vulnerability. People who on the surface appear to be ordinary and uncomplicated reveal their deepest secrets and anxieties related to a variety of issues, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, and the human condition in general.

Daniel A. Olivas is the author of Devil Talk: Stories, Assumption and Other Stories, The Courtship of Maria Rivera Pena, and the children's book, Benjamin and the Word / Benjamin y la palabra. He is editor of Latinos in Lotusland: An Anthology of Contemporary Southern California Literature, which brings together 60 years of Los Angeles fiction by Latino writers. He has written for many publications including the Los Angeles Times, the El Paso Times, Tu Ciudad, Exquisite Corpse, THEMA, California Lawyer, and The Jewish Journal. He shares blogging duties on La Bloga (http://labloga.blogspot.com) which is dedicated to Chicano and Latino literature.
