Do you enjoy jazz and swing music? Have you ever wished you could dance like they did back in the 1940s? Well, Wednesday Night Hop is a new social dance venue in Sunnyvale whose mission is to create a new kind of club - one where you can dance AND socialize with your friends in a warm, comfortable atmosphere. Beginning on the first Wednesday of each month, 4 week series lessons are taught every Wednesday night. Both beginner and intermediate levels are available, and you don't have to bring a partner to sign up for the class.

Coyote Point Museum’s new Discovery Classes are designed for youth Pre-K – 4th grades, and incorporate live animals, outdoor experiences, art and science activities all in one engaging program. We provide opportunities for students to observe the natural world, explore and experiment with how things work, and discover answers to their own questions.

Their program philosophy is unique because of the experiential-based activities and projects, small class sizes which provide a more personal experience, and professional educators who create an inspirational learning environment.

The Discovery Classes are progressive and students registering for multiple sessions will build on previous lessons and learn something new each time. Discovery classes are for one hour, one day a week for five weeks. Pre-registration is required. For more information, please visit the official website.

The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum & Planetarium offers free ongoing weekend workshops for you and the whole family to enjoy. Immerse yourself in ancient Egyptian culture, art, and artifacts while learning something new. These monthly recurring series workshops are held every Saturday and Sunday. They are offered free with the purchase of museum admission.

Introduction to Hieroglyphs
Hieroglyphs were sacred carvings referred to by the ancient Egyptians as mdw ntr, or the divine words. In this workshop, you will learn the language and history of the Middle Kingdom hieroglyphs, a classical or ideal form used from about 2100 BCE to 1600 BCE in ancient Egypt. Join us for this presentation on Egyptian hieroglyphs and learn to write in the language of the Egyptian gods.

Ancient Egyptian Jewelry
Jewelry, while stylish, was more than just fashion to the ancient Egyptians. Learn about the different types of jewelry worn by the ancient Egyptians, how certain stones and styles served specific functions, and take an up close look at some of our rarely displayed pieces.

Ancient Egyptian Cosmetics
Learn the history of cosmetics in ancient Egypt. Discover how and why certain minerals were used, and how other nearby cultures influenced cosmetics in the region.

Egyptian Oils & Perfumes
Perfumes were often used in temple rituals as well as everyday life. Discover how oils and perfumes were used in ancient Egypt and experience the scents of various types of perfumes.

Games & Leisure in Ancient Egypt
Life was not all work and no play in ancient Egypt. Learn how the ancient Egyptians spent their free time. Try your hand at various popular games such as Senet, Mancala, and UR.

Artifact Exploration
Join the museum as they bring some very special artifacts out for you to examine up close. Learn about basic artifact handling and examine pieces made from different types of materials.

Scavenger Hunt
This activity is fun for the whole family! Discover colorful and precious jewelry, predynastic pottery, glass and alabaster vessels, bronze tools, and Coptic textiles. Answer a few questions in each gallery and receive a prize at the end of the hunt.

Wonders of Mesopotamia
Join the museum as you explore the empires of this area such as the Sumerians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians and many more. Learn how these empires contributed to modern society through the invention of the calendar, mathematics, the alphabet, and glass blowing techniques.

Caravaggio is the most mysterious and perhaps the most revolutionary painter in the history of art. He created a new language of theatrical realism in which the drama of nature and truth was his watchword. Professor Rushing teaches art history and humanities at De Anza College. She has taught at the San Jose Museum of Art and San Jose State University. She currently teaches short courses for the Institute for the Study of Western Civilization as well as for the Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning.

During Ms. Brundege’s 1990 assignment on remote Baffin Island in the Nunavut Territory of Canada for the National Geographic Society she discovered that she loved everything about the Arctic North. As her work evolved from photojournalism to fine art photography she continued to create photographic stories from the northern environments of Churchill, Manitoba and throughout Alaska. Ms. Brundege will share slides and stories about her arctic and sub-arctic adventures with an emphasis on her current work today on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Resistance for Survival Conversation and slide show with activist photographer Steven Cagen. Activist photographer Steve Cagan has been working for over five years on a project in El Chocó, Colombia. El Chocó is the northwestern-most department of Colombia, right on the border with Panama. It's an area of great natural beauty and incredible bio-diversity, and home to river-centered Afro-Colombian and indigenous cultures. The area has been isolated from and ignored by the rest of the country for a long time. While their reasonable demands for public services such as health and education were not met, they could still live well on the bounty of the rain forest. This life and the whole area are under great threat, as Colombian and international economic interests are determined to eliminate the rain forest to develop large industrial agricultural and infrastructure projects. If nothing changes, the rain forest of El Chocó, with its important environmental treasures and the special cultures it shelters, will soon be gone, probably within a generation. The one hope is the potential of the local communities to organize and resist the pressures to abandon their homes. Steve has been photographing the environment and the people of the area and working closely with the few organizations committed to defending the people of the region. This month's Other Voices will feature the story of El Chocó as seen through Steve's incredible photographs and narrative. Free and open to the public -- Be a part of the studio audience! Wheelchair accessible. Part of the "Other Voices" television series produced by Peninsula Peace and Justice Center.

After spending 10 days filming in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Steves calls the country the most poorly understood yet fascinating land he’s ever visited. In his new special airing on PBS this January, Steves’ travelogue showcases the splendid moments of Iran’s rich and glorious past and captures the essence of today’s Persian culture and the 70 million people who call Iran home. From Friday prayer in a leading mosque to anti-American murals to the challenges confronting Iran’s youth, Steves hopes his message and experiences will help us better understand a nation that continues to be shrouded in mystery and clouded by myths and mistruths.
