Nahat's Moments is a pure movement expression of the dazzling Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 49 by Felix Mendelssohn and showcases the individual talents of the Company members. The joyful finale suggests a Gypsy-like charactère dance of passion and tenderness.Salut D'Amour is a ballet for three couples celebrating their friendship and affection for each other. Set to the sweetly elegiac music for piano and violin of Sir Edward Elgar and reflecting the period of youth without caresin a world about to change forever. Mahler was awarded a Choreographers Fellowship in 1992 by the National Endowment for the Arts. The piece had its premier in 1987 with Ballet Mississippi. This will be its San Jose premiere. This program is rounded out by the toe-tapping, hand-clapping, finger-snapping fun; that's Square Dance, a lickety-split hoedown. Classical ballet takes an over-the-shoulder look at its folkdance roots complete with live on-stage "caller."

According to Balanchine's own notes on the ballet, it was Stravinsky who hit upon the idea of a suite of dances based on a 17th century manual of French court dances--sarabandes, gillards, branles. The title of the ballet, Agon, is the Greek word for contest, protagonist, as well as agony or struggle. In addition to the court dances, a traditional classic pas de deux is added. The ballet is in three parts, performed without interruption. The first part consists of a pas de quatre for four boys, a double pas de quatre for eight girls and a triple pas de quatre for all twelve dancers. Then two girls and a boy dance a pas de trios. The boy dances a sarabande. The two girls dance a gaillard. A pas de trios is replaced by another and the second part of the ballet begins with three branles. Next comes the pas de deux with variations for the boy and the girl. The music for the first movement of the ballet is repeated and the piece ends as it began, with four boys dancing alone. Jardin aux Lilas is a dramatic ballet in one act; a tragedy of manners. A haunting story about a marriage of convenience set in England in the late 19th Century. A moonlit garden filled with lilacs, but still dark and foreboding set the scene as Caroline, a young bride, bids farewell to her lover while her financé (whom she does not love) parts with his mistress. Jardin Aux Lilas (Lilac Garden) was one of the first ballets by English choreographer and dancer Antony Tudor to be staged in the United States. Léonide Massine's fabulous Gaîté Parisienne danced to a score by Jacques Offenbach rounds out the program. A story of romance and high spirits set in a turn-of-the-century café, this mini-ballet features the rousing and uninhibited Can-Can in a tale of the nightlife of old Paris.

A new and electrifying force in dance, New York–based Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet champions works by emerging American and international choreographers, combining a foundation in classical ballet with edgy, up-to-the-minute physicality. Led by Paris-born artistic director and former Alvin Ailey dancer Benoit-Swan Pouffer, Cedar Lake is known for the depth and rigor of its residencies with choreographers—including Israel’s Ohad Naharin, who set his frenetic Decadance on the company. The New York Times hailed the work as “dancing that pulls viewers right out of their seats…. Weird and wonderful poetry of the body.” Dance Magazine named Cedar Lake one of its “25 to Watch” in 2008, noting, “With enthusiasm shooting from lithe limbs, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet was last season’s sleeper favorite…. Technical feats, willful exuberance, and emotional power blew audiences away.”

This class is a musical preschool. We start in a circle and sing songs as we warm up and relax. Most of the class is sung. We cover basic ballet terminology and simple movements, moving like animals and such. For tap we concentrate on rhythm. But making noise with the different parts of our feet is great! We end with acrobatics. Here we work on flexibility and the basic movements, as well as the hardest thing, waiting your turn. A song and dance is introduced for both tap and ballet. Class is structured to be fun.

OVO is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects' home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion. When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives.

It’s love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.

OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew.

A typical Friday Night Waltz Dance like this one draws 100-200 participants, and includes between forty and fifty dances in an evening. About half the dances are waltzes, including several kinds of waltzes: cross-step waltz, ballroom, rotary, viennese, redowa, and hesitation. Often, there are about six polkas and about four tangos. Many of these polkas are fast and often played to silly music, such as Constantinople and Gilligan's Island. The rest of the dances are the mixers, the choreographed waltzes, one-steps, swing, tango, cha-cha, mazurka, schottische, an occasional hambo, blues, Zweifacher or salsa.

The event features four sets, with a one to two minute break between sets, so that people can take a breather. The easier and slower dances are in the first two sets, with faster and harder dances in the third and fourth set. There is usually a mixer in the first and third set, and a choreographed waltz in the the second and fourth sets. These are not hard rules, just typical. Free water and light refreshments are offered.

This event takes place in the Church's Fellowship Hall, located on the second floor. The entrance is on the right of the courtyard, facing away from the street.

Newcomers are welcome! The dancing is easy to learn, the music is live, and the event is a great social mixer. Come alone or bring a guest. Contra dances are done in long lines of couples. Two couples dance together as a group of four, going through a sequence of moves, or figures, for one round of the dance, until the two couples have changed places up and down the line and are facing the next couple, ready to start another round of the dance.

Newcomers - you can dance and have fun on your first night! No lessons are required, but, if you come a half hour early, you will be shown the ropes. The mood of a Contra dance is upbeat and quick-tempo. But the music isn't as fast as it sounds. You can do every figure at a walking pace. The event is accompanied by top-notch musicians performing music from Irish, English, and American folk traditions and led by dance callers with local and national followings.

You get a chance to walk through each figure under the caller's direction before the dance starts, and both the caller and your fellow dancers will help you remember what to do at each point in the dance. The dance repeats, so, after a few times through, your body will start to remember what to do, and you can fully enjoy the music!

The Academy of Classical Ballet–California is proud to present Thumbelina, a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a thumb-sized girl and her many adventures. In the story, a tiny girl named Thumbelina emerges from a beautiful bouquet of flowers amongst the butterflies. The generous and caring Woodland fairy makes it her responsibility to watch over the vulnerable Thumbelina. One evening, while dancing in the glade with her winged friends, she is carried off by a chorus of frogs who want the miniature maiden as their playmate. The mischievous frogs tease poor Thumbelina and leave her on a lily pad in the middle of the stream – keeping her captive. With the help of friendly fish, Thumbelina escapes and drifts along until coming across a cluster of ladybugs.

As the seasons change, Thumbelina finds that she is far from home and does her best to protect herself from the elements, but when winter comes, she is in desperate straits. The vulnerable and lost Thumbelina is given shelter by an old mole who takes advantage of her situation - wanting her as his wife. She finds this prospect deeply upsetting, worsened by being far from home and in an awful situation. Thumbelina somehow finds the will to escape, fleeing to a far off land with an indebted swallow, whom she selflessly nursed back to health during the harsh winter. In a sunny field of flowers, Thumbelina is reunited with the butterflies and receives a pair of wings from the gracious Woodland Fairy to accompany her on their travels from flower to flower, happy and finally free.

The Academy staff encourages you to attend this debut performance and to enjoy this special production, which features talented, hard-working and amazing dancers.

Presentation Repertory (PresRep) is a five week summer theatre program for boys and girls ages 12-17. In these five weeks, the students take classes such as acting, improvisation, dance, vocal technique, and technical theatre, as well as rehearse and perform two musicals. This year, the mainstage, full-scale musical is the Broadway hit Footloose, and the second is the original musical, Thespis & Company. Every student will receive roles in both shows.

Throughout the course of the five weeks, not only will the students learn about theatre and enhance their performing skills, they will learn team work, cooperation, leadership, and self-esteem. This fast-paced, high-energy program is always as rewarding as it is fun. The students make life-long friends with whom they get to cheer on and share their achievements; and there is no greater reward than getting to opening night and seeing what they have accomplished together. No previous theatre experience is necessary.

At this recurring event, newcomers are always welcome! The live music for tonight's dance is scheduled to be provided by San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers.

Smuin Ballet concludes its 2009/2010 season with an invigorating spring program consisting of three enthralling, high-energy ballets: visual stunner Petite Mort, passionate Songs of Mahler, and the striking French Twist. European choreographer Jirí Kylián’s breathtaking Petite Mort, which pairs six men and six women with six fencing foils, set to two of Mozart’s most beautiful piano concertos, marks a significant collaboration for Smuin Ballet. Petite Mort encompasses Kylian’s trademark grace and inventiveness in a roundelay in which aggression, sexuality, vulnerability, tenderness, and harmony all play a part. Smuin Ballet will be the first Bay Area company to perform this jewel by Kylián, one of the most inventive and daring choreographers at work today and for many years the driving force behind Nederlands Dans Theater.

Continuing the program is Michael Smuin’s Songs of Mahler, a vivid ballet that flows through a range of emotions from playful to dramatic and passionate. Rounding out what will be a remarkable program is rising star choreographer Ma Cong’s fast and flirtatious piece French Twist, set to five musical selections by French composer Hugues Le Bars. Currently a principal dancer at Tulsa Ballet, Cong was named one of Dance Magazine’s “Top 25 to Watch” in 2006 and created French Twist at the National Choreographers Initiative in the summer of 2008.

The ballroom dancing the world recognizes today is competitive ballroom dance, sometimes known as dancesport. It is comprised of ten dances, which can all be danced in “closed ballroom” hold. The style danced in Burn the Floor is called “international style” and has been danced in competition since 1920. International style ballroom dance consists of ten dances, split into five Latin American dances and five ballroom dances (standard). Each Burn the Floor dancer has spent a lifetime training to compete against other dance couples. This show allows the dancers to demonstrate their love and passion for their art.

Stomp is performed in theaters, but it is not a play, musical, or opera. It is not theater in the traditional sense of the word. There is no speech, dialogue or plot. However, it does have two characteristics of traditional theater: mime and characterization. Each performer has an individual character which is distinct from the others. These characters are brought out through the mime and dance in the show.

Stomp started out as two "buskers" on the streets of Brighton. Busking is the British term for a street performance where people are encouraged to stop, listen and watch. It is a very old custom, dating back to booth theaters erected at village fairs in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The street busker of today also echoes back to the wandering minstrel of the medieval fair. Thus, it seems that Stomp's roots are in theatre, but can it really be called "theater"?

The entire show is highly choreographed, interweaving dance into all of its aspects. In Stomp, there is a symbiotic relationship between dance and music. The music is created within the dance, but the dance itself is dependent on the music for its rhythm and character. Stomp shows a true marriage of movement and music, where both create and enhance each other.

This year the Peninsula Youth Ballet (PYB) Company combines professional and promising young dancers in a performance of Alice in Wonderland (2 acts). The Peninsula Youth Ballet was founded in 1979. It is a non-profit organization, whose goals are to bring attention to young dancers and to promote an interest in the art of ballet and dance within the local community. Under Ayako Takahashi’s direction, PYB has provided dancers the opportunity to improve their dance skills through professional level preparation and presentation of classical and contemporary works.
