The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum & Planetarium offers free ongoing weekend workshops for you and the whole family to enjoy. Immerse yourself in ancient Egyptian culture, art, and artifacts while learning something new. These monthly recurring series workshops are held every Saturday and Sunday. Introduction to Hieroglyphs
Hieroglyphs were sacred carvings referred to by the ancient Egyptians as mdw ntr, or the divine words. In this workshop, you will learn the language and history of the Middle Kingdom hieroglyphs, a classical or ideal form used from about 2100 BCE to 1600 BCE in ancient Egypt. What happens when you take the "bippity-boppity-boo" out of Cinderella? You get something even more magical - Rossini's enchanting La Cenerentola. This isn't Rodgers and Hammerstein or Walt Disney - no singing mice, fairy godmother, or glass slippers. There is a charming prince, however, as well as obnoxious stepsisters, a stupid stepfather, and a matching pair of diamond bracelets. And everything ends happily in a blaze of glorious coloratura. The Cinderella in this opera is named Angelina, and she is as kind and gentle and forgiving as her name implies. And because this is a Rossini opera, Angelina and the rest of the cast also possess everlasting energy and exceptional vocal ability.

The music is fast, fast, fast, and the action is at full throttle. Practically everyone is in disguise most of the time, all the deception is hilarious, and the patter is never-ending. This is comedy in the fast lane, with dazzling music and vocal pyrotechnics. The Barber of Seville might have made Rossini famous, but it was La Cenerentola that cemented his reputation and made his comic style the world's favorite.

What was the sweetest moment of your life? For Magda in Puccini's La Rondine, the beautiful mistress of a wealthy banker, it was the night many years ago when she ran away from home and met a handsome stranger at a Parisian nightclub, the Bullier. He asked her name, she wrote it on a tabletop, and he did the same. Though she left without ever seeing him again, it was an enchanting, unforgettable interlude. Now she is very well kept and much more experienced - until someone reads her palm and tells her that, like a swallow, she will fly back to love.

And so, disguised as the shop girl she used to be, Magda runs off for a night of adventure at the Bullier. There, she meets a young man and begins to relive that other magical night. Although her wealthy protector arrives to tell her he hopes she won't regret her decision, she runs off with her new beau to a romantic idyll on the Riviera. Magda is happy with the way things are, but the young man hopes his parents will reinstate his inheritance and allow him to marry her. Although permission is granted, Magda is wise enough, discreet enough, and in love enough to know that her scandalous past will ruin her young lover. She returns home to her benefactor.

American Ice Theatre, (AIT) San Jose's premier professional ice dance company is presenting a fusion of dance and technology with an ice performance for the whole family.The full-length hour and a half performance will include two new works incorporating dancers, skaters, music, lights and effects. Under the direction of Jodi Porter, the AIT ensemble creates a magical experience through the art of dance on ice. Inspired by the movement of the ocean and the changing landscape of the artic, Glacier blends dance with skating in a moving and powerful way. Tech Then Tech Now... is a 45-minute progression of technology from the industrial age to now and beyond. Tech Then Tech Now…will highlight visual technology mixed with dance, singing and skating. With special guest skaters this year’s AIT production is a visual treat for the whole family. Enrique Jarquin and Lucy Yoo will be returning as premier dancers on stage. The 2009 AIT ensemble includes: Billy Kheir, Elizabeth McGlauflin, Elizabeth Handley, Julia Ponomarenko, and Ben Westenberger. Featured AIT skater is Olympian Beata Handra. The Tech Virtual Test Zone is a new area in the museum showcasing the world's first hands-on, interactive exhibits conceptualized and developed originally in the virtual world of the Tech's Second Life®. These new exhibits are the result of The Tech's virtual exhibit design initiative and competition, called The Tech Virtual, which was launched in December 2007 and aims to revolutionize the way new museum exhibitions are developed. The Tech Virtual Test Zone is a prototype exhibit area that will consistently feature virtual-world-to-real-world exhibits on a specific theme resulting from The Tech Virtual program. The first theme featured in the Test Zone is "Art, Film & Music", which is also the theme of a new permanent gallery that The Tech plans to launch by 2010, featuring some of the people and innovations from Silicon Valley that have contributed significantly to this field. To create the exhibits you will see in The Test Zone, The Tech engaged an international community of creative people in The Tech Virtual — experts in art, film, music, and technology from all over the world, including museum professionals such as exhibit builders, craftspeople and curators. Nahat's Moments is a pure movement expression of the dazzling Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 49 by Felix Mendelssohn and showcases the individual talents of the Company members. Mahler was awarded a Choreographers Fellowship in 1992 by the National Endowment for the Arts. The piece had its premier in 1987 with Ballet Mississippi. This will be its San Jose premiere. According to Balanchine's own notes on the ballet, it was Stravinsky who hit upon the idea of a suite of dances based on a 17th century manual of French court dances--sarabandes, gillards, branles. The title of the ballet, Agon, is the Greek word for contest, protagonist, as well as agony or struggle. In addition to the court dances, a traditional classic pas de deux is added. The ballet is in three parts, performed without interruption. The first part consists of a pas de quatre for four boys, a double pas de quatre for eight girls and a triple pas de quatre for all twelve dancers. Then two girls and a boy dance a pas de trios. The boy dances a sarabande. The two girls dance a gaillard. A pas de trios is replaced by another and the second part of the ballet begins with three branles. Next comes the pas de deux with variations for the boy and the girl. The music for the first movement of the ballet is repeated and the piece ends as it began, with four boys dancing alone. Jardin aux Lilas is a dramatic ballet in one act; a tragedy of manners. A haunting story about a marriage of convenience set in England in the late 19th Century. A moonlit garden filled with lilacs, but still dark and foreboding set the scene as Caroline, a young bride, bids farewell to her lover while her financé (whom she does not love) parts with his mistress. Jardin Aux Lilas (Lilac Garden) was one of the first ballets by English choreographer and dancer Antony Tudor to be staged in the United States. Léonide Massine's fabulous Gaîté Parisienne danced to a score by Jacques Offenbach rounds out the program. A story of romance and high spirits set in a turn-of-the-century café, this mini-ballet features the rousing and uninhibited Can-Can in a tale of the nightlife of old Paris.

Adam del Monte, adjunct assistant professor, has been on the faculty of the Thornton studio jazz guitar department since 2002, teaching flamenco and coaching the World Guitar Ensemble. Del Monte was both influenced by and inspired the younger generation of flamenco performers who were beginning to depart from the previous virtual space of Spanish flamenco. Del Monte, too, set out in new directions, integrating years of traditional and leading-edge flamenco training, as well as expanding his musicianship on the classical guitar. An eclectic awareness of jazz, world music and other contemporary forms led to new, creative renditions of flamenco repertoire. He has been commissioned by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet to compose a progressive flamenco piece entitled Cambio de Aire. He has collaborated with Yusef Lateef and the Atlanta Symphony at the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. His flamenco debut CD on the Spanish label Sonifolk (1998), Viaje a Un Nuevo Mundo (Journey to a New World), was favorably reviewed by Spain's most acclaimed flamenco critic Angel Alvarez Caballero as well as Miguel Mora of El Pais and Alfredo Grimaldos of El Mundo.

Having performed concerts regularly for the last five years, Gabriel Bianco has earned first prize in multiple international competitions in Austria (Vienna), Germany (Koblenz), France (Ile de Ré and Barbezieux), Poland (Tychy) and Portugal (Sernancelhe). His most recent win at the 2008 Guitar Foundation of America Competition has earned him the coveted 50-concert tour in the United States, Mexico, and Canada with additional concerts in China, Colombia, and Brazil.

Gabriel Bianco has already performed in over 30 music festivals across the word, in France, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Portugal, Slovakia, and Thaïland. At the age of 12 he performed for French television (Mezzo), and later appeared on Romanian television (TVR Cultura).

Born into a family of musicians, Gabriel received an early start on the guitar, receiving lessons with his father at age 5. A few years later, he began his studies in Paris with Ramon de Herrera at the Conservatoire National de Région, Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris and later at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris where he received the highest performance distinction under the teaching of Olivier Chassain. Since 2005 Gabriel has studied with French virtuoso Judicael Perroy.

Pianist Sandra Wright Shen received her BM and MM in piano performance from the Peabody Conservatory, under Ann Schein. She performed in Master Classes with Ruth Slencynska, Jerome Lowenthal, Andre Watts, and Rebecca Penneys and studied chamber music with Earl Carlyss. She studied Russian pianism with Zalina Gurevich, Oleg Barsov, and Lev Nauomov. She also collaborated in chamber music with Vesselin Parashkevov (concert master of the Vienna Philharmonic) and cellist Nina Kotova, and has worked with the Alban Berg Quartet, Jorg Demus, and Grant Johannessen.

Sandra won first prizes in the Hilton Head International Piano Competition, the Mieczyslaw Munz Piano Competition, the Taiwan National Piano Competition, and the Peabody Frances M. Wentz Memorial Prize. Sandra has recorded 3 CDs, debuting with her Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto. Sandra currently teaches at the Brevard Music Institute, and previously taught at Southern Illinois University.

At the age of 17, American pianist Kevin Kenner participated in the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and was awarded the 10th prize and a special prize from the jury for his promising talent. Ten years later, in 1990 he returned to Warsaw to win the top prize, the People's Prize and the Polonaise Prize. Earlier that year he won the bronze medal at the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow, together with a special prize for his interpretation of Russian music. He is the only American to have medaled in both competitions. Namik Sultanov is well-known as a distinguished pianist and pedagogue with exceptional lyrical gifts and a distinctive performance style. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, he showed extraordinary musical talent from a very early age. Playing violin and flute, he was a serious student of composition in his youth, composing more than 150 pieces that were featured at music school concerts. Although at that time a string student, he won first prize in the music school’s piano competition. At 12, deeply impressed by Van Cliburn’s stunning performance at the First Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, he began to self-study Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. Practicing day and night, he soon played all three movements for Ahad Israfilzade, chief conductor of the Azerbaijan Philharmonic Orchestra. Mr. Israfilzade immediately asked him to play with the Philharmonic, and the triumphant concert was a big sensation in the musical life of this capital city.

Limited Engagement! Transport into parallel universes of the past and future! Connect with iconic Star Trek moments and characters and celebrate the creative spirit of science fiction that gave rise to many of today's modern marvels. This exhibition spreads across more than 15,000 square-feet and features all five television series and eleven films that span over forty years.

This exhibit includes an authentic replica of the bridge from the U.S.S Enterprise NCC-1701, as featured in the original Star Trek television series. It also contains the trifecta of the Star Trek universe: a tricorder; a phaser, and a communicator - all from the original series.

Visitors will have a chance to ride through a Star Trek adventure in a full-motion flight simulator (for an extra fee) and to see the actual shooting model for the Borg Cube (that impending vision of doom as seen on Star Trek: the Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space Nine and in the movie Star Trek: First Contact).

Alexander Calder, trained as an engineer, challenged the long-held notion that sculpture was static and monumental. His inventive, colorful, animated “mobiles” epitomize the innovative, optimistic spirit of early-twentieth century modernism. In all of Calder’s mobiles, his objective was not to represent or refer to nature, but to capture its dynamic actions and unpredictable, living systems. This exhibition will include mobiles, jewelry, and works on paper drawn from Bay Area collections, including the holdings of several of the Museum’s founders and longtime supporters.

Variations on a Theme is an expansive presentation of works by 30-40 contemporary artists mostly based in California, organized in thematic groupings, which tentatively include the environment and sustainability; the urban landscape; stories of people and the body politic; labor-intensive artistic techniques; and faith and spirituality. This exhibition showcases pivotal works from the collection, some of which have never before been on view, and highlights the Museum’s core mission of supporting the work of California artists. Chuck Close has revolutionized both contemporary portraiture and printmaking. Close made his first print as a professional artist in 1972 and printmaking soon became an important and most fruitful, experimental aspect of his artistic endeavor. His innovation in printmaking is now legendary. Close was particularly concerned that his prints not simply be smaller versions of his paintings, but rather that printmaking open up an additional arena of investigation that would require him to engage in image-making in completely different ways. In addition to including finished prints, this exhibition features full suites of Close’s preliminary proofs and various states of editions. Also on view will be the woodblocks and etching plates for several of the more complex images he has created. The exhibition is no less than a stellar investigation into the mechanics of perception and virtuoso artistic process. The exhibition was organized by Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Texas. It has been seen at such venues as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; the San Jose Museum of Art is the only northern California venue.

70 Years of Painting is a survey of this major American painter’s work. In addition to Thiebaud’s popular paintings and works on paper, the exhibition features both his most recent and his earliest work and thus reveals the full spectrum of his career. More than a third of the paintings were done after his last retrospective in 2000: included as well are prodigal paintings Thiebaud made as a young student. Leo Villareal is the most prominent light sculptor of his generation. In 1997, he abandoned his work with interactive television and began creating sculptures in which he combined strobe lights, neon, and most recently, LED bulbs activated by the artist’s own custom-made software. The magic of Villareal’s work lies in his sequencing. Thousands of tiny white LEDs may resemble a starry night as seen in a planetarium, while tubes of colored LEDs masked by a diffuser are like a Monet painting of water lilies set in motion. His hypnotic and exhilarating light sculptures will be appreciated by both the young and old, experienced and inexperienced art viewers, students of both the arts and sciences, and engineers who will be tempted to analyze the artist’s algorithms. This is the first museum survey of the groundbreaking work of Villareal, whose stunning manipulations of light and color are internationally renowned.

The International Award-Winning San Jose Holiday Parade, considered one of the "Top 25 Parades in America” by the International Festivals and Events Association, is ready to start off the holiday season in Northern California! Adam Resurrected - This film is based on a novel by renowned Israeli author Yoram Kaniuk. It is the early 1960s in an Israeli mental hospital where all the patients are emotionally scarred Holocaust survivors, Jeff Goldblum, in a tour de force, plays a brilliant but deeply tormented camp survivor, once a famous German nightclub performer, whose soul died as a result of the degradation that he experienced during the war. The film is searing and dark, always powerful, and at times, both inspiring and uplifting. Derek Jacobi and Willem Dafoe shine as supporting players. Audience Note: This is a strong film with scenes that may be difficult for some.

Circumcise Me! - It’s non-stop laughter when standup comedian Yisrael Campbell—born Chris Campbell—tells of his conversion to Judaism from Catholicism. You can’t help but laugh as he relates how he had three circumcisions (it’s true!). His story is a side-splitting true tale of his conversion to Reform, then Conservative then Orthodox Judaism. Yisrael, who after a stint with illegal substances, says he was born “Catholic enough to know I was going to hell,” now has the pais to prove his Orthodox commitment. And, by the way, he lives in Jerusalem. Laughs galore are promised as Yisrael delivers standup comedy in this unusual story. Following the film, the afternoon of comedy continues as well-known South Bay comedian Jeff Applebaum keeps the laughs flowing.

Lost Islands - This is a film about growing up, relationships, and the special difficulties of Israeli life, circa 1980. In the Levy family, there are twin brothers, the outgoing of whom is favored by his mother, and the shyer one, who is largely ignored by her. As time passes, the brothers fall for the same girl, and their destinies are transformed forever when one brother is forced to stay at home to care for his father while the other is called to war. It’s a unique portrait of Israeli life with all the laughs and tears of an engaging family drama.

Presented by The Wave Magazine, the First Annual San Jose Short Film Festival is dedicated to honoring and promoting short films while providing an outlet where local and national filmmakers, scriptwriters and all-around movie mongers can showcase their creative talent. Born in Helwan, Egypt, Ahmed's parents immigrated to the US when he was one month old. He moved to Hollywood when he was 19 to pursue a career as an actor and stand up comedian. Ahmed attended The American Academy of Dramatic Arts and has been seen in such films and television shows as Iron Man, You Don't Mess With The Zohan, Swingers, Tracey Takes On, Roseanne, JAG, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn on Comedy Central and MTV's PUNK'D. Michael McDonald was born and raised in Fullerton, Orange County, California. He graduated from USC with a degree in Business and became a loan officer at a bank in Los Angeles. A friend took him to see a sketch comedy/improv show at L.A.'s famous Groundling Theater, and everything changed for him. McDonald quit his job as a banker, enrolled in the Groundling's Improv Program, and became a member of the troupe from 1992 to 1997. His first professional writing and acting jobs came from Concorde Pictures, Roger Corman's infamous low-budget movie studio. Starting as an extra, McDonald landed small roles in many B-movies of the early 1990s, and he gradually earned bigger roles as well as eventually writing and directing some films. He has had a cameo in every Austin Powers movie. After numerous small roles in various television sitcoms in the mid-1990s, McDonald obtained a starring role on Mad TV (1995). He is the longest-running cast member of Mad TV.

Even before appearing on Last Comic Standing, Alonzo Bodden knew there was nothing, absolutely nothing, that would ever make him give up comedy. "That's the drug," he says, "when they laugh, it's like I'm a jazz musician and they hear it and they get it. It's power to take the crowd wherever I want them to go. I love it when they laugh, especially when they relate through laughter. It's a beautiful thing. It also means I'm going to get paid, which is nice." Alonzo describes his material as cynically good natured in an angry suburban Negro kind of way. While he strongly believes that all young comics should study Bill Cosby, he freely admits that his mom is the funniest person he knows. When his family and friends attend his shows he loves and appreciates it. One of the great things about Alonzo's career is that he can make you laugh and fix your Learjet. One day, he hopes to have his own Learjet.

In 1983, Tom Arnold got his first taste of stand-up comedy when he performed at open microphone nights at the University of Iowa. Tom's comedy career had its ups and downs over the next several years until 1988, when he entered the Minneapolis Comedy Competition and won first place. With this victory in hand he decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue a stand-up comedy career. Once he hit Los Angeles, things happened fast. That same year he was hired as a staff writer for Roseanne's TV sitcom Roseanne (1988) and began to appear regularly on the show as "Arnie Thomas." He married Roseanne in 1990 and divorced in 1994. Since then, Tom has co-hosted Fox Sports Net's talk show The Best Damn Sports Show Period (2001) and does voiceover and comedy work.

Brian Scolaro was born in a log cabin in Eggplant, West Virginia in 1876. Actually, Brooklyn born Brian Scolaro is a stand up comedian most famous for being Stuart on two seasons of FOX's Stacked with Pam Anderson and Christopher Lloyd. After doing the new faces show at Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, Brian moved to Hollywood to be a regular castmember on NBC's Three Sisters (2001-02). At the turn of the last century, the poster rapidly became a vital force in the visual arts, as artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules Chereet, and Herni Van de Valde helped to establish it as an independent medium for visual communication through which the artist expressed aesthetic ideas through the shapes, colors, and composition of typographic as well as through illustrative elements. The changing nature of communication within twentieth century society demanded a simple, bold, and efficient medium that could be viewed and understood "on the fly."

Switzerland was one of several countries to be influenced by Bauhaus principles of visual composition propounded by constructivist artists such as El Lissitsky and Joseph Albers. They considered the artists as a designer from modern technological society, and offered radical ideas through new and dynamic typographic elements. With the success of the Bauhaus movement, the imagery of machined forms reduced to "functional" simplicity received a powerful international impetus. Although there was some work done during the Depression and World War II, it was only after the war that poster design activity increased. By the mid-1950s, strong, identifiable, groups of poster designers had emerged, producing works of striking boldness and geomometric simplicity.

Through examples of the "Swiss" approaches to posters, this exhibit focuses on the works of several artists/designers who have had considerable international influence on graphic design. They have been drawn from the private collection of noted designer Aaron Marcus, Fellow, AIGA; Member, CHI Academy and the ICOGRADA Graphic Design Hall of Fame; Editor-in-Chief, User Experience (UPA); and Editor, Information Design Journal.

Artist Jen Renzel creates work featuring little sideshow oddities, dark dreams, and mystical beings. Broken dolls, old toys, antique hardware, collaged images, and imagination are the ingredients for these shadow boxes.

According to Jen, “The broken down treasure at the bottom of a moldy box can be the cornerstone of a new creation. In fact, that’s often how the idea for a piece starts — with one broken doll, toy, or image that sparks the imagination. The rest is a continual trial and error process of finding which pieces fit together, then figuring out how to connect them, which can be challenging when working with oftentimes crumbling, frail and damaged materials and parts. Something tells me when a piece is finished. Some pieces come together quickly, and some take forever and are a struggle. In either case, I can lose hours and hours in the workshop, and the results sometimes surprise even me.”

Marilyn Chin is the author of three collections of poetry: Dwarf Bamboo, The Phoenix Gone, The Terrace Empty, and Rhapsody in Plain Yellow. Chin has won two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Wallace Stegner Fellowship, the PEN/Josephine Miles Award, four Pushcart Prizes, a Fulbright Fellowship, and numerous residencies. Her work can be found in a variety of anthologies, including The Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry and The Oxford Anthology of Modern American Poetry. She co-directs the MFA program at San Diego State University.

Truong Tran is a Vietnamese-American poet and writer living in San Francisco. He has received poetry fellowships from Arts Council of Santa Clara, the California Arts Council and the Creative Work Fund Grant. He teaches creative writing at San Francisco State University and Mills College. A founding editor of Outside Magazine, travel writer Tim Cahill is the author of seven books, including Pass the Butterworms, Pecked to Death by Ducks, Hold the Enlightenment and Lost In My Own Backyard. A former longtime Bay Area resident, he now lives in Montana.

Mr. Cahill is this year's Lurie Distinguished Visiting Writer. The Lurie Distinguished Visiting Writer, established through the generosity of Connie and Robert Lurie, has brought distinguished authors including Ursula LeGuin, James Kelman, Carolyn Kizer, and ZZ Packer to teach at SJSU for one semester each year.
