The Biennial is a celebration of creativity at the intersection of art, technology, and digital culture; the theme for the 2010 Biennial is Build Your Own World. “The best way to predict the future is to invent it,” posited Alan Kay. This idea encapsulates the Build Your Own World theme where: The future is not about what’s next; it’s about what we can build to ensure that what’s next matters. How can we, as resourceful, innovative, and knowledgeable local and global citizens build and participate in a desirable future in the face of global climate change, economic meltdown, political instability, and cultural divisiveness?

The 2010 01SJ Biennial is predicated on the notion that as artists, designers, engineers, architects, marketers, corporations and citizens we have the tools to (re)build the world, conceptually and actually, virtually and physically, poorly and better, aesthetically and pragmatically, in both large and small ways. Under the theme “Build Your Own World,” the 3rd 01SJ Biennial will present a broad range of exemplary work, which not only imagines the future (world) but builds it.

The 3rd 01SJ Biennial will take place September 15-19, 2010, throughout San Jose. It is about how powerful ideas and innovative individuals from around the world can make a difference and come together to build a unique, city-wide platform for creative solutions and public engagement. It is about the inspiration needed to build a world we want to live in and are able to live with.

A holiday adventure into Victorian London, partying with hundreds of costumed players in 90,000+ square feet of theatrically-lit music halls, pubs, dance parties and Christmas shops on winding lanes. It's a twilight evening in Charles Dickens' London Town - a city filled with lively and colorful characters from both literature and history. Enticing aromas of roasted chestnuts and hearty foods fill the air. Cries of street vendors hawking their wares ring out above the bustling crowd. Dozens of lamplit shops are filled to overflowing with Christmas presents. New this year: each patron receives a Victorian name, a Passport to the Past, and tokens for prizes if the Timegame is well played. And it's all in a Holiday Humor!

Adam Resurrected - This film is based on a novel by renowned Israeli author Yoram Kaniuk. It is the early 1960s in an Israeli mental hospital where all the patients are emotionally scarred Holocaust survivors, Jeff Goldblum, in a tour de force, plays a brilliant but deeply tormented camp survivor, once a famous German nightclub performer, whose soul died as a result of the degradation that he experienced during the war. The film is searing and dark, always powerful, and at times, both inspiring and uplifting. Derek Jacobi and Willem Dafoe shine as supporting players. Audience Note: This is a strong film with scenes that may be difficult for some.

Circumcise Me! - It’s non-stop laughter when standup comedian Yisrael Campbell—born Chris Campbell—tells of his conversion to Judaism from Catholicism. You can’t help but laugh as he relates how he had three circumcisions (it’s true!). His story is a side-splitting true tale of his conversion to Reform, then Conservative then Orthodox Judaism. Yisrael, who after a stint with illegal substances, says he was born “Catholic enough to know I was going to hell,” now has the pais to prove his Orthodox commitment. And, by the way, he lives in Jerusalem. Laughs galore are promised as Yisrael delivers standup comedy in this unusual story. Following the film, the afternoon of comedy continues as well-known South Bay comedian Jeff Applebaum keeps the laughs flowing.

Lost Islands - This is a film about growing up, relationships, and the special difficulties of Israeli life, circa 1980. In the Levy family, there are twin brothers, the outgoing of whom is favored by his mother, and the shyer one, who is largely ignored by her. As time passes, the brothers fall for the same girl, and their destinies are transformed forever when one brother is forced to stay at home to care for his father while the other is called to war. It’s a unique portrait of Israeli life with all the laughs and tears of an engaging family drama.
