The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum presents the Mithraic Mysteries, a 35-minute planetarium show. Of the many riddles left to us by antiquity, none is more intriguing than that of the ancient Roman religion known as the Mithraic mysteries. The teachings of this ancient Roman "mystery religion" of Mithraism were guarded with the utmost secrecy, revealed only to select initiates. While the Mithraists never wrote down their secret doctrines, they did leave a key to them in the arcane iconography, which filled the walls of their underground temples. Until now, all attempts to decipher this iconography have proven fruitless. Most experts have been content with a vague hypothesis that these images somehow derived from ancient Iranian religion.

In a groundbreaking work, Dr. David Ulansey has recently offered a radically different theory. He argues that Mithraic iconography was actually an astronomical code, and that the cult began as a religious response to a startling scientific discovery. The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum presents his theory of the mysteries concealed in Mithraic temple carvings that could reveal the central secret of the cult: a secret consisting of an ancient vision of the ultimate nature of the universe.

Two master innovators - jazz trumpeter/composer Dave Douglas and experimental filmmaker Bill Morrison - draw on the unique resources of Stanford University to create Spark of Being, a monumental work combining the screening of film with live musical performance (by Douglas’ electric band Keystone). This new work, commissioned by Lively Arts, and making its World Premiere in this performance, incorporates archival visual elements and newly developed sound components culled by Morrison and Douglas from the archives of the Cantor Center for the Arts, the Hoover Institution, CCRMA, and other sources on the Stanford campus.

Bill Morrison is best known for his film Decasia, a hypnotic collage of archival footage undergoing the process of decay. The Village Voice named Decasia one of its Top Ten Films of 2003. Dave Douglas is a DownBeat magazine Artist of the Year honoree and the Artistic Director of the Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Center. He has been a member of such celebrated ensembles as John Zorn’s Masada and the SFJAZZ Collective. His Grammy-nominated sextet Keystone combines electric jazz with electronica and other styles, and was formed specifically to perform new scores for classic films.

This presentation of Rossini's Armida is being simulcast live in HD in select movie theatres nationwide.

The mythical story of a sorceress who enthralls men in her island prison has inspired operatic settings by a multitude of composers, including Gluck, Haydn, and Dvorak. Renée Fleming stars in the title role of Rossini’s version, opposite no fewer than six tenors. Tony Award winner Mary Zimmerman returns to direct this new production of a work she describes as “a buried treasure, a box of jewels.” The fanciful and magical tale, Zimmerman says, “has an epic, enchanted quality and a tremendous visual element.”

Laurie Anderson is one of America’s most renowned—and daring—creative pioneers. Recognized worldwide as a leader in the use of technology in the arts, Anderson is known widely for her multimedia presentations, casting herself in roles as varied as visual artist, composer, poet, photographer, filmmaker, electronics whiz, vocalist, and instrumentalist.

In her new work, Delusion, which will debut at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and be presented by Stanford Lively Arts on May 5, Anderson explores sound and stories in a series of short plays. Using her inventions in vocal processing, signature violin pieces and lush sonic landscapes Anderson creates and inhabits imaginary worlds that become mental movies. Conceived as a ninety-minute technodrama, the new work combines technology, mystery and contemporary short stories in a unique new art form.

The Food Film Series continues in April! Fresh celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet. Directed by Ana Sofia Joanes 72 min, 2009.

On the night John Stoll was roused from his bed and carted off to jail, his attitude bordered on the cavalier. "Aren't you worried?" His lawyer wondered. "Hell no, I ain't worried," John answered. "I didn't do this. You can't convict me of something I didn't do." It was more than two decades before John Stoll was free again.

Executive Producer Sean Penn proudly presents Witch Hunt, a gripping indictment of the United States justice system told through the lens of one small town. It's John Stoll's story, but it's also the story of dozens of other men and women who found themselves ensnared in a spiral of fear, ignorance and hysteria. These people are Americans, working class moms and dads, who were rounded up with little or no evidence, charged and convicted of almost unimaginable crimes. All sexual. All crimes against children. Years, sometimes decades later, they would find freedom again, but their lives and the lives of their children would be changed forever. This film shows viewers what the real crime in this case is, not molestation, but the crime of coercion. Viewers hear from the child witnesses who were forced to lie on the witness stand as they describe scary sessions with sheriff's deputies in which they were told -- not asked -- about sexual experiences that happened to them. Their coerced testimony led to dozens of convictions. Many times their own parents were the ones they put behind bars.

Narrated by Sean Penn; directed by Dana Nachman & Don Hardy. Not Yet Rated ; 91 min, 2009. Introduced by Northern California Innocence Project Legal Director, Linda Starr & film production team!

The Food Film Series continues in May! This Academy Award-winner for Best Foreign Language Film was a big art house hit, spawning a whole international subgenre, "foodie" (films about the liberating effects of good food). It's adapted from a story by Isak Dinesen about two sisters in a 19th century Calvinist settlement in Denmark who, under their late father's rigorous spiritual dictates, pass up their chances for romance and worldly success. Years pass; they grow into charitable old spinsters and one day a French war refugee, Babette (Stéphane Audran), comes to work for them. Life goes quietly one for years until one day Babette decides to prepare a lavish gourmet dinner for the elders of the town, even though the thought of such decadence makes the sisters fear for their Christian souls. This all may sound rather dull to some viewers, but rest assured, no one who has seen this film has ever regretted it. Even with its measured pacing and austere emotional palette this remains a riveting experience from the first frame to the last. The acting is marvelously naturalistic, and the cinematography evokes the dark beauty of 19th century Scandinavian paintings, rendering the ancient, white-whiskered faces of the villagers, the windswept coastline, the wood-hewn interiors, and of course the incredible food, with a vital, deeply felt reverence that lingers in the mind long after the film is over. Directed by Gabriel Axel. In Danish & French with subtitles. Rated G. 103 min, 1988.

In this sly and charming drama, a family becomes unraveled and secrets are revealed during the week of mourning for their exuberant patriarch. Set in Polanco, a Jewish quarter of Mexico City, and spoken in Spanish, Yiddish and Hebrew, My Mexican Shivah is a dramatic comedy about how the death of a man results in the celebration of his life.

According to Jewish belief, from the moment a Jew is born, he or she is accompanied by two angels: the angel of light and the angel of darkness. With the passing of Moishe (75), his family and friends gather to sit shivah, the 7-day Jewish mourning ritual. The spirit angels Aleph and Bet, divine accountants, watch over the mourners actions and what´s been said about the deceased to calculate which angel will accompany Moishe´s soul to the afterlife.

The odds are against Moishe from the beginning. Family dysfunction aside, Moishe´s friends are attending for their own motives. And to make matters worse, while performing his duties, a Chevreman, who is a member of the Chevra Kadisha (sacred funeral society) is milking the family for all they're worth, charging for kosher food, slippers and other shivah goods.

Hebrew, Spanish, Yiddish with English subtitles. 102 min. This program is made possible by the Koret-Taube Initiative on Jewish Peoplehood.
Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the farmers, mostly immigrants from Latin America have since created a miracle in one of the country's most blighted neighborhoods.

This poignant, must-see film chronicles the life story of Sister Rose Thering, a gutsy Dominican nun who had the courage, the toughness, and the passion to resist the status quo and push for what she believed was right. She has made the battle against anti-Semitism her life's work and it is her spirit of resistance that shines throughout this documentary. (88 min.) 2006

This documentary film tells the extraordinary story of Herb Vogel, a postal clerk, and his wife Dorothy, a librarian-an ordinary couple of modest means who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history.

Arguably the most visually poetic of Rohmer’s films in his series of Comédies et Proverbes, Le Rayon Vert is an engaging, wistful tale which easily evokes the sense of yearning and isolation which marks many of Rohmer’s better films.

The French Film Club strives to offer the best of what French Cinema has to offer. A moderator will introduce the film and answer your questions after the movie. Feel free to debate the good, the bad and the ugly of each movie. Minors under 18 are only admitted if accompanied by an adult.

Dear Doctor - (Dir. Miwa Nishikawa, Japan, 135 mins.) A rural village doctor vanishes one day without a word, leaving the townsfolk to sort through his past, and their town's, in this poignant drama from one of Japan's most acclaimed female directors.

Voices - (Special live event, 60 mins., plus Q&A) Presented by Asian Americans For Community Involvement (AACI), this documentary follows the stories -- the successes, hardships, and hopes -- of three Asian American immigrants in Silicon Valley. Followed by a presentation by AACI.

3rd I South Asian International Shorts 2009 - (Video shorts, 81 mins., plus Q&A) A richly layered compilation of dark yet hopeful South Asian short films from India, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Aoki - (Dir. Mike Cheng and Ben Wang (USA), 95 mins., plus Q&A) This eye-opening documentary highlights the life of Bay Area Japanese American activist Richard Aoki (1938-2009), a founding member of the Black Panther Party.

The People I've Slept With - (Dir. Quentin Lee (USA), 90 mins., plus Q&A) Angela Yang knows what she wants -- sex! -- and doesn't care who provides it: Asian, Caucasian, Latino or Black, male or female. When she discovers she's pregnant, though, it's time to find the daddy.

A Village Called Versailles - (Dir. S. Leo Chiang (USA), 68 mins., plus Q&A) A moving portrait of a marginalized population that found its voice in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, this documentary depicts how New Orleans' Vietnamese community united and battled for their democratic rights.

Make Yourself At Home - (Dir. Soopum Sohn (USA), 93 mins.) An immigrant bride from Korea is brought into a cold Korean American home, one dominated by her frightful mother-in-law, in this deliciously terrifying horror film about remembering your roots -- or dismembering something else.

Like You Know It All - (Dir. Hong Sang-soo (South Korea), 127 mins.) An arthouse director (famous in East Asia) blunders his way through a series of uncomfortable encounters, most involving women, alcohol, and his own petty insecurities.

Prince of Tears - (Dir. Yonfan (Taiwan/Hong Kong/China), 120 mins., plus Q&A) Two young sisters come of age during Taiwan's brutal anti-communist crackdowns of the 50s. This examination of how living under terror can turn even the most hopeful dreams into nightmares was Hong Kong's entry to the Academy Awards.

Wandering, Wondering - (video shorts, 91 mins, plus Q&A) This set of films floats through the city like seeds from dandelions. On a bus, on a bike, these tales of love hide in alleys, hotel rooms, or in the anonymity of large groups.

Talentime - (dir. Yasmin Ahmad (Malaysia), 110 mins.) Three high school students sing, strum, and sign their way into each other's hearts while gearing up for a school-wide talent competition.

State of Aloha - (dir. Anne Misawa (USA), 77 mins, plus Q&A) This insightful documentary explores the explosive controversies surrounding Hawaiian statehood: sovereignty, imperialism, politics, racial hierarchies, and environmental sustainability.

Cooking With Stella - (dir. Dillip Mehta (Canada), 103 mins.) Two Canadian diplomats in New Delhi discover their cook is skimming off more than just the milk in this deliciously wry battle between the servants and the served, co-scripted by FIRE's Deepa Mehta.

Fog - dir. Kit Hui (USA/Hong Kong), 89 mins., plus Q&A) A young man grappling with amnesia wanders the streets of Hong Kong, looking for clues to his past, all while the city busily prepares for the tenth anniversary of its reunification with China.

In The Matter of Cha Jung Hee - (dir. Deann Borshay Liem and Ramsay Liem (USA), 75 mins., plus Q&A) In 1966, an American couple adopted a Korean girl named Cha Jung Hee, and renamed her Deann. There was just one important discrepancy -- she was not Cha Jung Hee. A remarkable journey through an individual's past and a national's scarred history. Preceded by Memory of Forgotten War.

The Forbidden Door - (dir. Joko Anwar (Indonesia), 110 mins.) A successful but mysterious Jakarta sculptor finds his days becoming nightmares, thanks to his involvement in a voyeuristic reality show, in this Indonesian horror film.

The Message - (dir. Chen Kuo-fu and Gao Qunshu (China), 115 mins.) In Japanese-occupied Nanjing, the Phantom is leaking Japanese secrets to the resistance. Five suspects are rounded up: will they destroy one another -- and the resistance -- to save themselves?

After almost fifty years of marriage, Countess Sofya (Helen Mirren, Academy Award nominee for Best Actress), the devoted wife, passionate lover, muse and secretary of Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer, Academy Award nominee for Best Supporting Actor), suddenly finds her entire world turned upside down. In the name of his newly created religion, the great Russian novelist has renounced his noble title, his property and even his family in favor of poverty, vegetarianism and even celibacy. When Sofya then discovers that Tolstoy's trusted disciple, Chertkov (Paul Giamatti)—whom she despises—may have secretly convinced her husband to sign a new will, leaving the rights to his iconic novels to the Russian people rather than his very own family, she is consumed by righteous outrage. Into this minefield wanders Tolstoy's worshipful new assistant, the young, gullible Valentin (James McAvoy). In no time, he becomes a pawn, first of the scheming Chertkov and then of the wounded, vengeful Sofya as each plots to undermine the other's gains. Complicating Valentin's life even further is the overwhelming passion he feels for the beautiful, spirited Marsha (Kerry Condon), a free thinking adherent of Tolstoy's new religion whose unconventional attitudes about sex and love both compel and confuse him. A tale of two romances, one beginning, one near its end, The Last Station is a complex, funny, rich and emotional story about the difficulty of living with love and the impossibility of living without it.

The longest-running midnight movie of all time stars Tim Curry as the kinky yet endearing “transsexual from Transylvania” Dr. Frank N. Furter, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick as his hapless guests Brad and Janet, Meat Loaf as motorcycle-riding rough trade and author Richard O’Brien as the hunchbacked butler Riff Raff. It’s harmless musical fun—a delightful spoof of Hollywood horror movies and Old Dark House melodramas. All of our engagements feature live casts who perform scenes during the movie, and the audience is always welcome to respond to the on-screen action. The Rocky Horror Picture was the first—and is still the best—interactive movie experience!

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvis) and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is based on the trilogy of books by Stieg Larsson and has sold over 7 million copies worldwide. Directed by Niels Arden Oplev (Worlds Apart).

Based on a true story of two high school friends who share a love of fantasy and literature, and kill to protect that friendship, Heavenly Creatures is a film that shocked the world and made a name for two people who have become big stars. Director Peter Jackson did a superb job casting the two leads. Melanie Lynskey plays the chubby Pauline with a palpable desperation. Newcomer Kate Winslet plays Juliet as a bubbly pretty thing, whose quick laughter is always just a step away from hysteria. It is an accomplished performance that makes it easy to see why she has become a big star. Rated R for violence and sexual situations.

Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, A Single Man is the story of George Falconer (Colin Firth, Academy Award nominee for Best Actor), a 52-year-old British college professor who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his longtime partner, Jim (Matthew Goode). George dwells on the past and cannot see his future as we follow him through a single day, where a series of events and encounters ultimately leads him to decide if there is a meaning to life after Jim. George is consoled by his closest friend Charley (Julianne Moore), a 48-year-old beauty who is wrestling with her own questions about the future. A young student of George's, Kenny (Nicholas Hoult), who is coming to terms with his true nature, stalks George as he feels in him a kindred spirit. A Single Man is a romantic tale of love interrupted, the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition, and ultimately the importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life. Directed and co-written by acclaimed fashion designer Tom Ford (making his feature debut), based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood.
