Fritz Lang's 1927 silent-film masterpiece, Metropolis, has been lauded as a visual marvel and the first science fiction film. The modern score was created in 1994 by Martin Matalon, who worked at Pierre Boulez's IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique) in Paris to produce a composition in which conventional instruments combine with computerized sound modeling and electronics in a vivid, jazz-infused soundtrack. This up-to-date soundscape complements the film's ever-relevant themes of the wonders and perils of technology.

Old Acquaintance (1943)

Jealous of best friend Kit (Bette Davis), a critically acclaimed but financially unsuccessful author and playwright, Millie (Miriam Hopkins) writes a novel, the first in a string of bestselling trashy novels. After eight years of neglect and taking a backseat to Millie's fame, her husband Preston (John Loder) leaves her. Another decade passes and Kit announces her intention of marrying the decade-younger Rudd (Gig Young). Millie thinks Preston wishes to reconcile, only to discover he is engaged. He also admits that he was in love with Kit, who had turned down his many advances. Feeling Kit to blame for the failure of her marriage, Millie flies into a rage and confronts Kit. Later, learning of Rudd's affection for Millie's daughter Diedre (Dolores Moran), Kit graciously steps aside to bless their union. In the end, Millie and Kit make up, sharing a champagne toast for each one's old acquaintance.

The Old Maid (1939)

Delia (Miriam Hopkins) breaks her engagement to Clem (George Brent), in favor of wealthy Jim (James Stephenson). Cousin Charlotte (Bette Davis) comforts Clem, and becomes pregnant. Clem dies in the war before he can marry her, and Charlotte raises her daughter as a "foundling." When Jim's brother, Joe (Jerome Cowan), falls in love with Charlotte, Delia, out of spiteful jealousy, destroys the forthcoming wedding, and eventually takes Charlotte's child from her.

To escape the edict of Egypt's Pharoah, Rameses I, condemning all first-born Hebrew males, the infant Moses is set adrift on the Nile in a reed basket. Saved by the pharaoh's daughter Bithiah, he is adopted by her and brought up in the court of her brother, Pharaoh Seti. Moses gains Seti's favor and the love of the throne princess Nefertiri, as well as the hatred of Seti's son, Rameses. When his Hebrew heritage is revealed, Moses is cast out of Egypt, and makes his way across the desert where he marries, has a son and is commanded by God to return to Egypt to free the Hebrews from slavery. In Egypt Moses's fiercest enemy proves to be not Rameses, but someone near to him who can 'harden his heart'. Starring Charlton Heston as Moses, Yul Brynner as Rameses, Anne Baxter as Nefertiri. Edward G. Robinson as Dathan, and Yvonne De Carlo as Sephora.

Redwood City Public Library present another movie night with Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day starring Frances McDormand in the title role. In 1939 London, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (played by Ms. McDormand) is a middle-aged governess who finds herself once again unfairly dismissed from her job. Without so much as severance pay, Miss Pettigrew realizes that she must for the first time in two decades seize the day. This she does, by intercepting an employment assignment outside of her comfort level as social secretary. Arriving at a penthouse apartment for the interview, Miss Pettigrew is catapulted into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Ms. Adams). Within minutes, Miss Pettigrew finds herself swept into a heady high-society milieu and, within hours, living it up. Taking the social secretary designation to heart, she tries to help her new friend Delysia navigate a love life and career, both of which are complicated by the three men in Delysias orbit. Over the next 24 hours, Guinevere and Delysia will empower each other to discover their romantic destinies. Rated PG-13; 92 minutes.

Join the city of San Bruno for the first annual Film Night in the Park film series sponsored by the San Bruno Culture & Arts Commission. This Friday's feature is Grease. John Travolta solidified his position as the most versatile and magnetic screen presence of the decade in Grease, one of the most successful motion pictures of all time. Olivia Newton-John made her American film debut as Sandy, Travolta's painfully naive love interest. Grease was not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade, peopled with characters of universal appeal, this is an energetic and exciting homage to the age of rock 'n roll!
