    The Pear Avenue Theatre

The Pear Avenue Theatre was created in 2002 by a group of theatre artists who believe that Peninsula audiences are ready for plays that will challenge them as well as delight and move them. It offers audiences a theatrical alternative -- intimate, startling productions that prove one can work wonders on a shoestring, as long as one's spirit is willing and one's imagination is wide.

This production each year is always a surprise. Some of the pieces are great, some of them not, sometimes the ensemble shines, sometimes not so much. I never know what to expect. This year I liked it quite a bit and though these pieces which are 8 short 10-15 minute plays seem to me to always go on JUST a bit to long, I was entertained by more pieces this year than I have been for several years now. Additionally, this year I saw new faces acting at the pear, and they were good fits to the intimate space, and to the variety of the pieces. If you have never been to Pear Slices before, this would be a good introduction to the local writing talent here and you might even see some actors you've never seen before! Collapse

This was my first experience with this theare company. It was upsetting to watch the heavy-handed treatment by both the director and the actors of a playwright who trademark is light, witty, banter. The dialects were uneven and the timing just wasn't there. In addition, there was no real human interactions, just actors reciting lines. A disappointment and I doubt I will return to the Pear. The Pear's production of Noel Coward's Hay Fever is superb. The cast has caught every nuance of this bright, witty, still relevant play.Thoroughly enjoyable. Don't miss it.

This is the first time I've been disappointed at the Pear--but it was quite a disappointment! This is undoubtedly a difficult play to do for a modern audience, but the director's take on it made the situation worse than if the play had been done traditionally. I generally enjoy clever "modern" interpretations, but in this case the costumes were distracting, the music was irritating, and the (often talented) cast seemed generally confused and misguided. By all means, continue to support the Pear--but just send a donation, or buy a ticket and throw it away; don't waste an evening watching this play. Collapse

Rebecca Ennals, director, and her cast did a wonderful job in bringing a complex comedy to life in a small theatre space. An ingenious adaptation of the opening monologue with tableaux helped to clarify relationships and to set the stage for an unconventional approach to the play. Actors play multiple roles and each character is distinct and delightful. Great costumes by Pat Tyler also added to the fun. The main thing is to enjoy what you see and hear and don't worry if you don't catch everything. After all, that is just the Way of the World. Collapse

No beef with any of the individual performances and I enjoy the script, but the feel of the show, the chemisty and the look, was a bit confusing. The connection to our own time was hinted at but not a strong enough statement was made I think then to have the modern music, sunglasses, and "celebrity" reference be anything other than a distraction and a detriment to the piece. It might have served the talent better to reverse the take with HINTS and homage to the original restoration (the corsets are back in vougue) but place the majority of the technical design elements in today. 3 hours is long and when pressed to make mental leaps for connections and purpose for that long it tends to become more chore than entertainment. The chemistry between folks wasn't all there the performance I saw, but a hardworking cast with some standout moments make it worth a look, particularly if you like Restoration Comedy. Collapse
