    Firebird Youth Chinese Orchestra

Based in San Jose, Firebird Youth Chinese Orchestra (FYCO) is primarily comprised of young musicians playing the traditional Chinese instruments. In year 2000, FYCO started with only 13 members. Currently, FYCO has 120 professional artists and students in three groups: beginner, junior and senior. FYCO enhances the cultural diversity and richness of American society while continuing to strengthen the Chinese community. It has been working toward its goal of building a unique Chinese orchestra and reaching a respectable level of artistic quality.

In the last few years, FYCO’s concerts have received exceptional applauses from its ethnical audiences and its distinctive arts organization observers. It was selected to perform in the City of San Jose Performing Arts Series 2003 as the only youth group, and perform in Festival of Cultures, June 9-12, 2005 as the only Chinese organization. Arts Council Silicon Valley proclaimed FYCO a “local treasure.” The National Endowment for the Arts praised FYCO as “one of the very few ensembles in the USA dedicated to educating young people, their families and communities through traditional Chinese music, and carrying out its mission with great success.”

Invited by the Ministry of Culture of P. R. China in 2004, FYCO visited and performed a joint concert with three top conservatories of music. FYCO is the first Chinese orchestra from the West to perform in China. Its cultural exchange activities bear an unusual historical significance.
